Bangladesh proposes to set up a coal power plant in India

It is reported that to bolster bilateral energy ties, Bangladesh has suggested setting up of a thermal power plant through a JV in India.

In this regard, Bangladesh has proposed that a coal block could be allocated to the joint venture entity while power generated from the plant could be supplied to Bangladesh.

The proposed plant would be on the lines of 1,320 MW thermal project in Rampal, being jointly developed by NTPC and Bangladesh Power Development Board, in the neighbouring nation.

Mr Tawfiq Elahi Chowdhury, who is Energy and Power Advisor to Bangladesh PM Ms Sheikh Hasina, said that "We have proposed that if we are given a coal block by the Indian government in India, then we could develop a power plant through a JV, in the same way as we are doing in Rampal."

The proposal was discussed during Mr Chowdhury's meeting with Mr Piyush Goyal, Power and Coal Minister of India, here this week.

According to Mr Chowdhury, India is very positive about the proposal.

Bangladesh, which is looking to increase its electricity supplies to meet rising demand, has an installed capacity of around 13,000 MW.

When asked about the progress of the 1,320 MW Rampal plant, Mr Chowdhury said that the first 660 MW unit is expected to be ready in 4 years time.

Project activities at the site have already started.

The project is being implemented by Bangladesh-India Friendship Power Company Private Limited, an equal JV between NTPC and BPDB.

Besides, India is supplying about 500 MW of electricity to Bangladesh and plans are on the anvil to increase the same to 1,000 MW.

So we supply the money,we provide infrastructure,we pollute our air,we use our dwindling coal reserves and after all that send all the electricity to Bangladesh.Nice going Bangladesh. You have learnt business.

Indians are good teachers.

Does this mean India can close the power plants whenever they please?

Indians get new jobs, sell their coal, get paid to supply electricity to Bangladesh. It is a win-win situation.

<jk> Plus India adds more CO2 to the environment which adds to global warming which will end up with Bangladesh sinking into the sea.</jk>
