Rajya Sabha member and editor-in-chief of The Pioneer Chandan Mitra on Thursday said the recent political developments in neighbouring Bangladesh were a cause for concern.

Speaking on the Shahbagh uprising, Mitra drew attention towards a disturbing sign of the Islamist party, Jamaat and the prominent Opposition party, Bangladesh National Party (BNP) being on the same page. He said that the uprising can be termed broadly as an apolitical gathering of youth — something Delhiites can associate with in the wake of similar protests in the national Capital — fuelled by social media.

Mitra was part of President Pranab Mukherjee’s delegation to Bangladesh. “Bangladesh’s political situation is divided into two — the relatively secular, Awami League, which is the ruling party, and the Jamaat. However, in the wake of the recent events of the BNP chief Khaleda Zia calling off her scheduled meeting with President Mukherjee and supporting the Jamaat’s bandh call, there could be a possibility of BNP boycotting the elections,” he said.

Others who spoke on the situation in Bangladesh were MP and former Minister of External Affairs Jaswant Singh, former High Commissioner to Bangladesh Veena Sikri, Rajya Sabha and Parliamentary Consultative Committee member on External Affairs Tarun Vijay and senior journalist Indrani Bagchi.

“The fight now is between nationalist and Islamist identity of Bangladesh and if we can arrest the Islamic spread, we can significantly control its penetration in countries such as Thailand, Myannmar and thus stem ****** terrorism,”
Mitra added.

Offering an optimistic perspective towards the Shahbagh uprising, Jaswant Singh, said, “Shahbagh manifests the essential Bengali interest of the youth which is reaching out, not in an impetuous manner, but preserving the Bengali interest. Bangladesh is in the midst of transformation through this movement and we should not prevent it from becoming a revolution.”

Terming the marginalisation and acts of violence towards Hindus in Bangladesh as horrendous, Tarun Vijay said, “Shahbagh square uprising is a wonderful movement after 1971, which has created a situation wherein secular people of Bangladesh have isolated Jamaat members, who are the agents of Pakistan’s ISI.”

And the comment is not even inflammatory. It's your emasculated brain working magic.

Well Thank you. Moderate Muslim Nation that respected All religion Those days are over bro... Its a war between radical Secularists vs Radical Conservatives

I think this stand off between Secular /Nationalist identity of Bangladesh against the Fascist Islamist Inhuman identity is a good thing.

This has been brewing for too long to let go. One way or another, it had to be settled.

However it seems that that the Secular/Nationalist identity if winning.

You are wrong. Current conflict is between Bengali Nationalism ( secular liberals) vs Bangadeshi Nationalism and Islamists... Without Police --- The later group outnumbers the first group by a large margin.....

What are you talking about? India has more Muslims than Bangladesh!

You guys like to spout utter nonsense and not take accountability for your own failing, instead its is easier to blame India the ever-present "bogey man". This is what your media and your govt will try and sell you so that all the blame is deflected from them.

India's objective in BD is quite clear.

@ Mitra was here for only 72 hours along with the Indian President. How could he conclude such a big thing ??? Last time once Man Mohan Singh intented to visit Bangladesh we heard that Jamaat has an support of 25 % what we found in his official website.

@ My dear learned Indian MP, " It is a conflict between Bengali Nationalism and Bangladeshi Nationalism ". Here it is not only Jamaat but also BNP and other Muslim oriented political parties of Bangladesh. You want to fight in piece meal. It will not happen in Bangladesh. Better concentrate some where elses that will help you. Supporting Rawami is dead issue.

@ You are talking about "Secularism", yes we have seen its real face from 1971 till 1975. Now, let's see who all wants Secularism in Bamgladesh :

1. All Hindus. Roughly 9/10 % of our total population
2. All Budha's. Rouighly 4/5 lacs of people.
3. All left oriented politiocal parties members. Their strenght is negligeable. They are not even capable to get 1 seat in National assembly.
4. Supporter of Awami Leaque. It is difficult to say now-a-days how much support Awami Leaque has in Bangladesh. But it is experienced that if free and fare election is held Awami Leaque including all left oriented political parties will get maximum of 50 to 60 seats out of 300 seats. So, in term of % it comes to only 20 %.
5. Memebers of "Udichi Shipi Gushti" and "Joi Bangla Shipi Gushti ".

And I tell you if a civil war breaks out, within 3 months all key Awami Leaquers will be finshed if at all they remained inside Bangladesh. And the most interesting thing is a big chunk of Awami supporter will fled away the very second day of civil war.
