The government plans to change the English spellings of five districts to make them sound similar to the Bangla alphabet.

The proposed spellings are Chattagram (for Chittagong), Barishal (for Barisal), Kumilla (for Comilla), Jashore (for Jessore) and Bagura (for Bogra).

The suggestions will be placed at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation-Reform or NICAR on Monday, said Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside over the meeting at her office.

NICAR works to reorganise districts, sub-districts, police stations, form new ministries, divisions, form and reform different administrative units with the prime minister as its convener.

Existing name is better.Seems like govt. is infested with Indian name changing disease.All of the major Indian cities name are now changed.

Even these name are not identical to Bangla pronunciation.It should be-

Chottrogram is stead of Proposed Chattagram
Borishal rather than Barishal
Joshore rather than Jashore
Bogura rather than Bagura..ব্যাগুরা:lol::lol:

Chittagong sounds good in English, no need to change. I don't even remember the last time I called it ''cottogram''. Barishal and Jeshore, sure, seems like an improvement and actual Bangla name. Bogra, I always like that spelling for no reason. I don't see anything wrong with comilla, same as cat.

That buggs me too. Why use 'a' everywhere when we should be using 'o'.

Most of the people in most of the time now use Chittagong even in Bangla conversation.I don't know why govt. is acting over nationalistic.Chittagong is also came from a Bangla word Chatgaa. So what's wrong with this name? I failed to understand.

By the way Chattagram is difficult to pronunce than Chittagong which rather come easily in the mouth. I am sure, foreign people will struggle and corruptly pronounce this Chattagram word.

This is exactly what I was about to say, there is no fixed version of 'Chittagong' in Bangla. People in Chittagong usually call it 'Chatga' in the local dialect while 'Chottogram' is only used in written Bangla. I would have preferred it to be shortened, say 'Chittong'.

In any case, there is no need for this useless mess up with the names. Simply waste of money.

Sylhet = সিলহেট
সিলেট = Sylet/Silet

Government should solve these type of lol ingrezi spellings first...

We actually do pronounce 'h'. It's almost silent but not completely. Just pay attention when you say the name and you'll see. Or maybe it could be just me who have seen 'sylhet' written more in English than in Bangla that I lightly pronounce it with 'h'.

Regardless though, just like the spelling 'Bogra', I like 'Sylhet' spelled like this if not more. Do not dare to change it.

I do that in Bangla conversation too. As I have said, It has to be very rare for me to ever call it chottogram in any conversation. Maybe I am used to it but 'Chittagong'' rolls off the tongue easier and sounds better in any language conversation.

সিলেটের ইংরেজি বানান ঠিক না করলে ঈদের পরেই আন্দোলন। (ঈদের পরে কোন ঈদ সেটা জানানো হবে)...

1) People of Chittagong generally call it Chatgaon, and not Chattagram.
2) Barishal is ok.
3) Kumilla is also ok, although the British would like to spell a cat not by KAT.
4) The word Jessore is very old name, written with Jim, Sin and Re in Urdu and Persian. So, it is basically something like JESR.
5) The name Bogra is very old. It derived from the name of Bogra Khan, who was the 2nd son of Sultan Ghyasuddin Balban of Delhi. Bogra Khan came to Bengal with the Sultan to crush a rebellion in Bengal. The Sultan made him the Subedar of Bengal, entrusted him with a huge number of Sultani troops and returned to Delhi.
Subsequently, Bogra's eldest brother, Mohammed, was killed in a warfare with the Mongols in the west. But, Bogra Khan chose to remain the Subedar of Bengal after the death of his father in 1287. Bogra's eldest son, Kaikobad, was declared the new Sultan in Delhi. Entire Hindustan was then being ruled by the Turkey-Afghan group of people, who settled here and made Hindustan their home.

.
Good initiative. I personally don't like the spelling of bogra.
