Bangladesh: No Defence Procurement from US for Now

Know enough to see a military dictator installed by US, overthrowing a democratically elected government. Don't need to know more than that.
Are you aware morsi was supported and guided by the obama adminstration? Are you aware morsi threatned to burn egypt if he doesnt win the elections? Are you aware egypt was sanctioned due to the ousting of morsi?

Listen. I am not here to discuss Egyptian politics nor am I interested in it.

The fact of the matter is, you have Sisi in power with US's blessing. Whom Trump called his favorite "dictator".

So you can demonize Morsi all you want, but the fact of the matter is he was democratically elected. Sisi was not. Unless you want to call the subsequent elections as "election" instead of "selection".

Yes, it is likely. I liked your recommendation in the other thread. If we go for twin engine Hornets to keep US off our back, then J-10s can be perfect replacement to the F-7s.

But it all depends on what kind of pressure US applies on BD govt. next. They already started with RAB sanctions based on human rights. We don't get GSP anyway, so perhaps they will put barriers to BD exports to US? Or perhaps limit the foreign aids? Or, they could go outright for covert regime change through a coup.

If there is a coup and a new government installed, which I assume would be BNP, then it is almost guaranteed we are going to be in US camp.

Coup in BD would not be easy. BD has far stronger and stable governance than in Pakistan.

BA is firmly pro-AL. All the key commanders are AL members or affiliated to it.

BNP is a mess and cannot get public on their side.

This stance is a visible sign that AL can resist US pressure.

was the 2014 elections anything to you? The elections were rigged to his favour in order to prevent a civil war ignited by his gang and its supporters, Marshall tantawy did this. Even his election and transparency are in question good thing hes dead and his gang in prision and the rest now hunted by the intelligence everywhere in the world. You can call him everything you want, it wouldnt change the fact that hes guiding egypt into the right direction

Agreed. Military coup especially will be very very difficult. BAL loyalists are everywhere in military. BAL ensured that over the last decade. Unless US is able to build a fringe element, but chances of that succeeding is low.

Plus, both BAL and BNP ensured since 1990s the military participation in UN missions, which are highly lucrative for military personnel. Which is why we haven't seen BD military directly taking power since 1990.

BNP is a mess organizationally due to ALs crackdown, but if US wants a regime change- BNP and a coalition of anti- BAL parties are their best option.

So yes, it seems BAL can resist pressure for now. But once US start going after BAL leader and affiliates illegal wealth outside Bangladesh, I am not sure they can hold off for long. Anyway, let's hope we get to stay neutral for as long as possible.

BA will stay firmly onside.

As long as Hasina does not betray BD, which I am sure she will not do, the rest of the AL hierachy will just have to take the loss of Western assets and privileges to maintain BD independence.

The other thing is that India is also on the same side and so Hasina will have at least the tacit support of Modi in this.

It's not a matter of threat. It's about which camp BD lies in and how it may impact US's interests.

If you have followed the thread, then you will see that US has increased it's meddling in BD lately, as now having influence over BD is of strategic interest to US. To what extent they will go depends on how much they really want BD to be in their camp.

Regime change is a last resort, but something not unheard of in this part of the world. Especially seeing what just happened in Pakistan.
Dear, I am not trying to be rude or something. Let me ask you: Does it really matter which camp BD lies? It would not impact US interests in the slightest.

Bangladesh is a so called "third world country" just like India and Pakistan. It has no natural resources. No nukes or a strong military. No Geo-strategic location. Basically BD is 0% threat to US/western interest.

You are right regime change is a last resort. Bangladesh is far away from that "last resort". At the moment it is not even a threat.

Going a little off topic but I must admit that I am grateful for the US regime change in Pakistan. This regime change has ensured COMPLETE Indian domination of South Asia. Pakistan had long been the primary threat to Indian domination of South Asia. Guess what? Not anymore.....

dnt get too excited it just some statement and show its politics

maybe usa dont wants to give too much sweets as we will have diabetics lol

its political games give and take and slave :)

Regime change is easier when the economy is in downfall. BAL understands this and it is in their best interest to keep up the pace of growth. BAL focusing on the ''bread'' aspect of ''bread and circus'' for now.

I'd put my money on a Islamist crowd. The country is increasingly moving in an Islamist direction. This coupled with displeasure with BAL politics can propel an Islamist crowd to power, perhaps in alliance with BNP. Not that I would endorse such a backward stride but this seems feasible.

An Islamist goverment would be very easy to control. Probably the US would need support from Gulf allies to do this. In turn more likelyhood for Bangladesh to become radicalized and send warriors to fight in Burma. Of course such a goverment would only be made to pose a threat to Chinese interest in the region, and never challenge Indian interests.

BD is important strategically as it is right next door to Myanmar that gives China an outlet to the Bay of Bengal and hence the Indian Ocean.

I half agree with you that US will not go all out for regime change in BD but it would love to have a US-lackey like the BNP in power and will at least make some attempt to get BD policy to change to it's liking.

I dont mind siding with USA. They helped us alot, especially with our NGOs. NGOs did a marvelous job on our HDI development.

And don't forget it was USA and West Europe who was with us on Rohingya crisis...

I agree with you. The West after all is BD’s biggest costumer.

But there is a big big problem with that. The Wests’ biggest ally in the region is India, a nation whom is increasingly agressive and would do all it can to prevent Bangladesh from having a capable defence.

In fact, India is so important for the Western strategy to succed that, given choice between Bangladesh and India, the West would sacrifice BD every single time.

China is the probably single biggest guarantee for Bangladesh continued independence and getting a potent Armed Forces.

As i see it BNP really is a party of ghadas.
Awami League sits comfortably because there really isnt any other political party in BD that has even 10% of the competence that Hasina has shown.

As much as i dislike the chetona cultist, i cannot see any good alternative to her rule.
