Patrol Craft ‘Shurma’, the second such sea-vessel manufactured by Khulna Shipyard with the technical assistance from China is officially transferred to Bangladesh Navy at a ceremony organised at the Khulna Shipyard.
The 50.4-metre long, 7.5-metre wide and 4.1-metre tall warship can travel up to 23 nautical miles per hour.The ship, armed with two 37 millimetre cannons and two 20 millimetre anti-aircraft guns and can continuously sail for seven days.
Warship ‘Shurma’ is the second vessel to have been handed over to the Navy after construction of a total of five warships began on March, 2011.Officials said building of a patrol craft locally costs Tk 540 million as opposed to its import cost of Tk 1 billion.
Once a "White Elephant" ,Khulna Shipyard a commercial enterprise of Bangladesh Navy has been developed into a leading ship building and repair organization over the past years.
