'Bangladesh may see Egypt-like uprising'

Dhaka, Feb 12 (bdnews24.com) — A senior BNP leader has warned the government that 'an Egypt-like uprising' may take place in Bangladesh.

"The government's failure has created such a situation in the country that might trigger protests like Egypt," party standing committee member Moudud Ahmed told a discussion titled 'Election Pledges and Reality' at the National Press Club on Saturday.

Referring to the fall of Mubarak after his 30 years of one-man rule, he said, "Democracy is not democracy when it turns into autocracy. People in counties like Sudan, Jordan and different countries in the Middle East want democracy like people in Egypt."

About the country's present political situation, Moudud said, "Bangladesh is now under the grip of autocracy in the name of democracy."

He said the recent protests in Munshiganj against the government bid to construct an airport at Arial Beel demonstrated people's anger against its misrule. "Such a pent-up mood now prevails everywhere in the country and this may explode anytime."

Moudud said BNP has planned to gradually intensify the ongoing anti-government campaign and ultimately force the government to step down.

"We are not in favour of taking a whimsical decision on launching a vigorous movement. We are demonstrating patience. That's why we enforced only four hartals in the last two years."

Taking a swipe at the government for its failure to run the country, he said, "Not only the people, but also my friends Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta and Rashed Khan Menon are criticising the government for its massive failure."

"Tofail Ahmed has said with courage that there had been no development and reconstruction of roads in the last two years. I thank him for this," Moudud told the discussion.

He said the government had also miserably failed to tackle the share market turmoil and improve the law and order situation.

@@ The winds of democracy is blowing from Magreb towards Middle East. Initially it started at Tunisia than at Egypt. Protests are going on at Jordan, Sudan and Yeman. A new Islamic political party is already formed in Saudi Arabia. It might also flare in Turkey. Turkey is a very controlled democratic country where no Islamic political exists.

@ I remember in the decade of ninties how Socialist countries falls one by . First in USSR, than in Poland, Hungary and finally in East Germany the last vanguard of Socialism and it totally changed the European physical structure.

@ I think now it might hit in Saudi Arabia and once it hit that country it will flare in other small countries of Middle East. It is now in fomating stage. As we all know there are in total 22 countries of Arab origin. This time probably all Arabs might be together.

@ Once all the Arabs are together than the wind might comes towards South East. It is true that our country is democratic country but at present are we really democratic country ? People cannot protest, people cannot criticise the govt, govt is making secret pacts one by one. Soon the govt is going to amend the constitution where all Islamic political parties would be banned. Govt's education policy is being bitterly criticised by the Islamic minded people.
For the last 2 years no delopment in our country. Only we are hearing of making of Padma bridge, elevated express, mono-rail, 4 satellite cities around Dhaka. Prices of essential items are beyond control.
"Tofail Ahmed has said with courage that there had been no development and reconstruction of roads in the last two years."
Rashed Khan Menon has bitterly criticised the govt for massive failure.
Suranjit Sengupta has said mere criticing BNP will not help the govt. He also said govt has measerably failed in tackling the share market and price hike.
Ershad has also bitterly criticise the govt in failure in law and order situation.

So, all these situation are definitely not infavour of govt.

You can not manage everything at the same time. You can not go ahead if you cling to past. If - everyday-n-everytime - you are busy in talking about 71-history-n-sentiment, war criminals, Bango Bondhu, stooging for India, name-n-constitution changing, blaming others for own failure, political revenge-war, and plus lying-corruption-n-terrorism as bonus, then how-n-when would you get time to develop the nation, control the food price and stock market?!!

You=any govt.

A new world order seems knocking on our door. Although it Looks like nothing will happen in Bangladesh. And, BNP still incapable to lead a proper uprising. They are still busy saving the home, sons of the Gen. Zia. If anything happens, will rise from the root level of people. Where BNP/AL/Jamat/JP wont get the fruit i must see.

I agree with you. BNP keeps barking at AL but has no guts. They seem to be regaining some momentum in the political playing field seeing the recent municipal poll results, but that is still not enough. If they want to make a comeback and redeem themselves and show that they have guts, they need to get organized.

To the boldened part:
TWO THUMBS UP!

No egypt style uprising in democracy, unless you want army to be in power. Democratic govt will almost always agree to popular demand(even if that demand is bad for the country in the long run), so what will people fight against?

They will have to comeback alone and without Jaamaat. The single BNP is hundred times popular than the alliance with Jamaat. And, the last municipals result proved it. BNP contested alone, and scored a good result.

I guess people are really fed up with the so called Alliance Fanda'z.

Against Ind/Pak/BD's common enemy "Corruption"

Against Ind/Pak/BD's common enemy "Corruption"
Corruption is not an identifiable enemy that an uprising can target. A corrupt individual or regime can be. But then, if you remove that, it will be replaced by another corrupt individual or regime.
Fight against corruption should target systemic change, and uprising has too much emotion to demand that.
