An unidentified man was burnt alive near Burimari union parishad under Patgram upazila in Lalmonirhat district on Thursday evening allegedly for dishonouring the Quran.
Villagers said that an unidentified man, aged about 42, was caught and kept in the Burimari union parishad building in the afternoon for his alleged derogatory comments on Islam and keeping foot on the Quran at Burimari Jame Masjid.
As the news spread in the area, angry locals gathered around the union parishad, broke open the door of the room where the man was kept confined, dragged him to the adjacent Burimari–Lalmonirhat highway and began to beat him at about 8:00pm, they said.
The mob then set the man afire in an injured condition, leading to his death, they said.
Earlier, the angry people burnt the motorcycle used by the victim, they added.
Tension was running high in the area until filing of this report at 10:00pm.
Patgram police station officer-in-charge Sumon Kumar Mohanto, acknowledging the fact, said that they fired a few rubber bullets to bring the situation under control.
The OC said that additional police forces were deployed in the area.
