Bangladesh makes swimming lessons mandatory in schools

DHAKA: Bangladesh has made swimming lessons mandatory in schools to try to save the thousands of children who drown every year, a government official said Thursday.
Around 18,000 children between the age of five and 17 drown in low-lying Bangladesh every year because they do not know how to swim, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

“It’s a huge figure, which is 20 times higher than Australia,” education secretary Nazrul Islam Khan told AFP.

He said schools had been ordered to use local ponds or swimming pools to teach their pupils to swim.Drowning has been described as a hidden epidemic in Bangladesh, a delta nation that floods frequently.

It is a very good idea for people
living in flood prone areas ; they can rescue themselves in a flood
without waiting for authorities to come and help

.
Very good decision,
I guess this should be made in every part of world where its possible.
Its a very healthy excersise and can be a life saver too.

And where exactly would they swim? There is no way something like this can be enforced in Dhaka and also village schools lack funds to provide basic education, let alone swimming.

Like always Hasina saying $hit will be done but nothing happens.

Knowing to swim doesn't necessarily save one from drowning in rivers and seas. That's a whole different kettle of fish. But it is still a good move from a health perspective. Swimming is an excellent exercise at all ages.

But I'm curious, how would this be enforced? Will every school have a swimming pool or facilities? Surely that's not economically feasible?

Why is that ? too scared to try ?
On topic: a great decision ,everyone should know how to swim at least .
Didn't got the chance

Once my cousin threw me in a pond ....that was the first and last try lol
