Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Bangladesh was involved in sabotaging a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Conference (SAARC) head of states conference in Pakistan, Express News reports.

The foreign minster was responding to the questions of National Assembly (NA) members on Thursday about relations with Bangladesh.

Asif told the assembly that Islamabad has been making efforts for the normalization of relations with Dhaka.

“Pakistan does not desire any tension in relations with regional countries, including Bangladesh,” he said, according to Radio Pakistan.

“Bangladesh is not implementing the tripartite agreement of 1974 and over the last few years several capital punishments have been executed in connection with the 1971 war,” Asif told the lawmakers.

According to the minister, Pakistan has consistently urged government of Bangladesh to uphold its commitment as per the tripartite agreement.

“Pakistan desires to move ahead but the other side will also have to reciprocate to our efforts,” he stressed.

Pakistan will not compromise on national interests under any circumstance: Asif

The foreign minister said the sixth round of the bilateral political consultations with Bangladesh is expected to take place in the first half of this year in Dhaka.

He expressed the confidence that this would provide an opportunity to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

I think it will be better if we keep the relationships with Bangladesh at minimum - I don't want Bangladesh spilling all of their garbage on us like Afghanistan. Also, I don't think Pakistan-Bangladesh relationships carry any value more than Pakistan's relations with any random country in southeast Asian region and I'm truly surprised on NA wasting their time discussing Bangladesh. We should not be allocating more or less importance to Bangladesh than the other countries in region but at par.

"Sabotaging SAARC summit" sounds pretty much over the top. I'm not sure if the minister really said that or it's just the media.

Pakistan was steering a global campaign against the International Crimes Tribunal which made the Bangladesh government uncomfortable that led to the boycott of the SAARC summit in Islamabad.

If Pakistan really wants to normalize the relations, it needs to start afresh and leave 1971 aside. People generally are not hostile towards Pakistan here and after the Rohingya crisis, there is a realization among the people about the importance of strong relations with the Muslim world.

WHy is PAK sticking with SAARC, I do NOT understand. India would always keep SAARC as dysfunctional as possible since the only good organization in Indian eyes is one that they can dominate and they can not dominate SAARC because of PAK and so it may as well be dead. India wants their own little fish pond where they will be the only Shark and BD being a small fish is just doing his master's bidding.

People think it's Pakistan stuck in time - believe it or not, I think we had put 1971 thing behind long ago and moved on - though we remember the incident because it's essential the same thing never happens again but there is no sentiment attached (neither hate nor love) when we discuss Bangladesh. However, when talking about fresh start, like any ordinary citizen of Pakistan, I don't think there is any reason for Pakistan to attribute more or less importance to Bangladesh than current level. I personally think our diplomatic relations and importance we attribute to Bangladesh must be at par with importance we attribute to other countries in southeast Asian region.

Pulling off from SAARC will be seen as diplomatic failure - SAARC is already dead, why should we take the blame of its failure?

This kind of diplomacy is what makes Pakistan a laughing stock to the world. That's why from US president to Afghan president talks sh!t about them. Idiot here accusing Bangladesh of not implementing tripartite agreement....Does he even know the details of that agreement?

Pakistan did not put 195 military officials of Pakistan to war crime trial. And they stopped taking the Urdu speaking community only after taking a few. Pakistan violated the agreement much before Bangladesh did anything. This kind of speech is more appropriate for a clown than a foreign minister.

If you follow Pakistan's activities in the sessions of UNHRC or similar fora, Pakistan repeatedly brings in the issue of the International Crimes Tribunal which is completely Bangladesh's internal affair. You don't see Bangladesh bringing in the issues of Baluchistan in such fora because Bangladesh respects Pakistan's sovereignty.

As I said, Pakistan needs to start afresh and let bygone be bygone.
