Bangladesh govt plans national Wi-Fi services

The Bangladesh government is planning to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in 130,000 places, including schools, markets and railway and bus stations, in a partnership with mobile operator Grameenphone to provide internet services. The Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MoICT) and Grameenphone reached agreement on the plans at a meeting held at the MoICT recently, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported online. The meeting gave responsibility for implementation of the project to the executive director of the Bangladesh Computer Council, S M Ashfaque Hussain. Grameenphone has agreed to partner the government's effort to bring internet-based services to the doorstep of the people, said N I Khan, secretary of the MoICT. In the meeting, the MoICT and GP also agreed to a joint venture project to support mobile services for issuing national ID cards, passports and driving licences. The MoICT and GP will work together to develop mobile applications for various services of government.
