Law minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said in Parliament that the government has a plan to purchase more fighter jets of advanced technology in line with the Forces Goal-2030 to modernise Bangladesh Air Force.

Anisul Huq, who is in charge of the Ministry of Defence in Parliamentary Affairs, said this in reply to a tabled question of ruling Awami League lawmaker elected from Laxmipur Anwar Hossain Khan.

The minister said that there were currently eight squadrons fighter jets in the Bangladesh Air Force to protect the country’s sovereignty.

He said that Bangladesh Navy currently has more than 65 warships, two helicopters and four maritime aircraft, including two submarines, to protect the country’s sovereignty.

The minister said that the government has also other plans to include frigates, corvettes, Offshore Petrol Vessels (OPVs), Mine Counter Measure Vessels (MCMVs), Large Petrol Craft (LPCs), Ocean Tugs, Harbor Tugs, Oil Tankers, Logistic Ships, floating cranes, hydrographic survey vessels and hovercraft in Bangladesh Navy in the future in phases based on the budget allocation to protect the country’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque told Parliament that there are no freedom fighters working in government services at present.

He said that according to the ministry’s circular, the last date of birth of the freedom fighter was May 30, 1959.

Accordingly, the service period of a heroic freedom fighter will be up to 30th May, 2019. At present no freedom fighter is working in government service as per rules.

The minister also said that the ministry issued a circular on January 17, 2018 regarding the age of brave freedom fighters.

Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Shahab Uddin informed the House that that the global biodiversity is facing a serious threat due to human activities.

In response to the question of AL lawmaker elected from Kishoreganj Afzal Hossain, he said, according to the United Nations, if the current trend of nature’s destruction continues, 1 million species may become extinct worldwide within the next 10 years.

The minister also said that if climate change and global pollution continue at their current pace, one in three species of animals and plants worldwide could become extinct by 2070.

The law minister said BAF had 8 squadrons of jet fighters to protect our sovereignty. But actually BAF has less than 3 squadrons of jet fighters. They have 36 F-7 and 8 MIG-29. May be he included jet trainers also.

Correction, more training jets !

Even if we accept K-8 and Yak-130 as 'fighter jets' still it does not become eight squadron. K-8 and Yak-130 is considered light combat aircraft as they have ground bombing capability. With these planes, BAF can stretch it's squadron count to five. But it's effective fighter jets are 8, not 8 squadron.

I think he included basic trainers too. Anyways, our inventory includes less than three squadrons of jet fighters, which is absolutely insufficient to face the challenges from IAF and MAF. Pathetic.

Just wait until 2030 and buy KF21 block 2

KF21 is fit with BD geographical situation.

A low observable fighter with two efficient F414 engine (enhanced) means it can do deep stright to both India or Myanmar territory if necessary

BD will likely focus on the economy until 2030. Man, you are currently in some sort of critcal situation that needs economic improvement as Today oil, gas, and energy prices are more expensive than before. Thus BD shows difficulty to even import important energy commodities like coal recently. Even BD needs IMF help to solve current problem.

So I doubt BD will soon buy any new fighter jet, BD will likely hold some time before modernizing its Air Force.

Bangladesh would be better off with JF17s block 2s which are far better than anything Bangladesh has at the moment and best value aircraft on the market.

As far as I know BAF is looking for twin engine aircraft. Is JF-17 a twin engine aircraft?

JF-17 may not be a twin engine aircraft, but for mass induction as F-7 replacements, they are nice force multipliers and short range tactical missile platforms. Yes I'd say even as a marine Long range missile (exocet type) carrier to target ships. If a Mirage F1 or Super Etendard can do it, so can the JF-17. Of course - equipped with long range tanks.

That is one of the use-case scenarios for the air force - trust me.
