Why do figures of foreign taxpayers, remitters mismatch ?

The number of foreigners working in Bangladesh or how much money they send back home has not yet been confirmed by any authority in Bangladesh. Only unofficial reports say at least 500,000 foreign workers including investors and businessmen are active and the amount they remit would be no less than US$5 billion.

However, reports cause many eyebrows to raise when the number of foreigners who secured taxpayers identification number (TIN) in Dhaka until the end of June 30, 2019, is found to be only around 9,500. As the country is implementing a number of mega projects that require procurement and expertise from abroad, the number of foreigners is believed to have increased.

Again, the number of work permits issued by, for example, Bangladesh Investment Development Agency (BIDA), is not that high as well - a total of 25,619 foreign nationals obtained such permits between 2011 and September 2019. This figure is far lower than the one presented by the Home Minister in parliament in early 2018. A total of 85,486 foreign nationals including 67,853 owners of business enterprises were working in different sectors within Bangladesh, said the Minister.

National Board of Revenue chairman Mosharraf Hossain Bhuyian believes the number of foreign workers in the country would be more than 1.0 million.

Last year, then president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Md. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin said that Bangladesh was the fourth largest source of remittances for India. A website also reported that Indians working in Bangladesh remitted US$4.0 billion in 2016. And again, such figures were not reflected in the official reports, including that of the Reserve Bank of India.

Still, the fact remains that there is outbound remittances from Bangladesh, which are roughly estimated at one-third of what Bangladeshi workers send home in a year (US$15 billion or so).

Why outward remittances are not traced is partially answered by the NBR chairman who told this newspaper that some employers in Bangladesh "conceal the actual payment information to their workers while some show them to be tourists".

This proves that physical presence of the foreigners working in industrial units, or as technical experts or consultants has not been detected properly. The taxmen might regret that the foreigners earning a lot of money are depriving the country of tax but most of them have come to meet the demand shown by local employers and can hide their income because they receive help or patronisation of their hosts. Presumably, most of those who work even without permits have come at least with permission (visa) to enter this country.

Are these legit figures? I never heard of an Indian working or starting a business in Bangladesh.

These must be illegal Bangladeshis staying in India but working in Bangladesh.

Yup there's that and also likely a lot is just crony corrupt Bangladeshi big-wigs laundering their ill gotten wealth to abroad too.

No other country wants to cooperate with BD in tax evasion cooperation and wealth account sharing information for a reason.

So by saying waaaah-India, they got some easy scapegoat to deflect with and also divert attention from themselves. No one else takes them seriously.

The UN they always do their cry drama at over bunch of other things (eg. Rohingya) certainly doesnt....it estimates money remitted from BD to India to be very paltry....and much much more the other way.

Countless Indian companies are doing business in BD. And they employ many Indians. Most of the Indians doing business or their Indian employees dont have work permit though. They are on travel visa for 1 month and they keep coming and going. And majority of BD Hindus have their families and homes in India. They have dual nationality. For example husband works in a lucrative position in BD, while whole family lives in India. But if there is a election in BD, they swarm on the border to vote.

Why do you let them do that? It seems like a major security risk for BD.

It does seem a bit far fetched. Whole BD Hindu families voting and then leaving? No sovereign country could allow people to move back and forth with such little oversight, entering on tourist stays and then working in factories. Does BD even need imported labour?

If true then your govt should do something before this issue begins to rot BD from the inside?

BD people in general arent that bright. So they are always treated as colony. Even by pathetic Hindus. Lol. General perception. For well background, educated Muslims its bad. For shabby background, poor Muslims its honey land. Through media manipulation. For Hindus its God level.

Not labourer. Supervisors. And voters, they made sure their favourite party stays in power for foreseeable future. BD is a pathetic country, the less said the better.

I was actually happy to know that Bangladesh is independent and on its two feet. I knew India had limited influence over Bengla government but never knew that India controls and violates Bangledesh's autonomy in such ways.

What garbage. You don't live in BD, do you?
I do.And let me tell you something.Virtually all people of BD, educated or otherwise, views India as enemy.
Don't equate the subservient policy of the govt with common Bangladeshis.
