Bangladesh: Former Army Chief jailed in money laundering case

A Dhaka court sentenced former Army Chief of Bangladesh Harun-Ar- Rashid and 46 officials of the Destiny-2000 company to varying jail terms on Thursday on charges of money laundering.

The case relates to the embezzlement of Taka 1861 crore by the Destiny Tree Plantation Limited which had collected money from more than 8.5 lakh investors for the project.

Destiny 2000 Managing Director Mohammad Rafiqul Amin was sentenced t0 12 years and fined Taka 200 crore. Former Army Chief Harun-Ar-Rashi was sentenced to 4 years jail term and a fine of Taka 3.5 crore. Destiny-2000 chairman Mohammad Hossain was sentenced to 10 years and fined Tk 1.5 crore. However, 39 of the convicted people are absconding and they were sentenced in absentia.

The Destiny 2000 scam is considered to be the worst multi-level marketing scam in Bangladesh. It came to light in 2012 after the country’s central Bank of Bangladesh noticed the huge irregularities in the scheme launched in 2008.

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Destiny officials and charges were pressed against 46 people in 2014.

The judge in his verdict declared that the assets of the company will be liquidated to compensate the shareholders and investors of the scheme. It will be carried out by a committee to be constituted by the government, ordered the court.

Harun-Ar-Rashid is a retired Bangladesh Army general. He served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army between 2000-2002. He is also the recipient of Bir Pratik honour for his bravery in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

If justice would be served, many top chirs holders in Pakistan will be hanging by the rope as well. The biggest traitors and thugs are sitting on the top chairs.

Happy to see that justice is served but could be a political vendetta as well.

A semi-dictatorship is what Asian countries need. It's not like our democracies are any fairer - rigged elections, rigged courts, rigged appointments in every branch of govt. I'm happy to do away with the illusion of democracy in favour of long term stability.

And it's clear to me, Hasina is pushing for more fairness in many areas of society - income distribution, access to services and legal rights - yes there's a long way to go but it's night and day compared to 20 years ago.

The developments in BD too, even though there is graft, are worth every penny. The MRT, nuclear plant, new motorways and bridges they cost whatever they do today - but in 100 years they will still be there for people's use. When the London Bridge was being built it was a scandal of corruption in England - but today it is a world landmark.

Imran Khan is more similar to SH than I realized before, they were blamed for corruption under their watch - but it's in the nature of our societies, and leaders have to pick their battles. Similarly they had to appease extremists early on, appease military now and then. But if IK had time like SH he would have slowly got them under control just like she did. As a model of change in Asian society, this approach has now been proven by SH.

This is the reason Bangladesh is developing. When the govt can punish ex COAS and put current COAS on leash and limit chowkidar to their role then country can develop.

He was corrupt in a corrupt war of corrupted conscience.

Pakistan should request his handover.

As if your country is not full of chors already. You want more, most welcome. Take him, give him hot anda therapy for all we care.

Knowing Haseena, this looks more like a political vendetta. Not that this guy was honest or anything. There is a very informative documentary made on role of Army chief and his family in corruption across Bangladesh as they are very closely linked to Haseena and her government.
