Dhaka, Dec 1: Bangladesh is aiming to grab a slice of the vibrant tourism industry in South Asia and earn $1 billion by 2014, the tourism minister said on Thursday.
We hope to attract 1 million tourists by 2014 and if one person spends $1,000 on an average we can easily earn a billion dollars, said GM Quader. The minister was speaking at a seminar on Adventure tourism in Bangladesh organised by Brac University Adventure Club in Brac University in Dhaka. He also launched the publication of a magazine on adventure tourism -- Adventure Bangladesh.
According to World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), South Asia has 1.2 per cent share of the $1-trillion global tourism industry, while India enjoys 15 per cent share of the South Asian market.
Growth rate in tourism industry is particularly faster in the emerging economies (8 per cent) than the advanced ones (5 per cent) and we have to grab a segment of the market, the minister said.
According to the April 2011 interim update of the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer,
international tourist arrivals grew by close to 5 per cent during the first two months of 2011.
However, Quader said tourism has not yet been accepted as a contributor to the state coffer by people, even at government level, saying that this is the biggest obstacle for the industry to boom in Bangladesh.
Ananta Kumar Chowdhury, director, commercial, Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, also spoke on the occasion.
