Bangladesh expects China’s role in shifting 5,000 Rohingyas from zero point

Bangladesh has requested China to persuade Myanmar to take back the 5000 Rohingyas, who are now staying at zero point on Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Momen said this while talking to the reporters at his office after his meeting with Chinese envoy Li Jiming.

The foreign minister said that China has been engaged in facilitating negotiations between Myanmar and Bangladesh to resolve the Rohingya crisis.

But he also repented that though China is sincere in its role, the expected result is yet to come.

The minister also informed that preparations are underway to start the repatriation but he failed to give any specific timeline as to when the first batch of Rohingyas will be taken back by Myanmar government.

In this connection, he mentioned that there are complications over the verification process conducted by Myanmar.

"In most of the cases, it is found that they've verified some members of a family but other members of the same family are not verified. It made the Rohingyas reluctant to go back as nobody wants to go back and leave their family members here," the minister added.

He also mentioned that though a team from Myanmar was scheduled to arrive in Cox's Bazar to meet the Rohingyas, the visit did not take place.

"Such meeting is important for confidence building among Rohingyas" he pointed out.

The foreign minister also said that after assuming power, the Myanmar government military government expressed its willingness to recognise the agreements between the previous Myanmar government and Bangladesh over the repatriation.

"We took it as a positive move. But later, we did not find any concrete efforts to expedite the repatriation from this government, which is very upsetting. "

Dr Momen expressed his happiness over China’s role in convincing Myanmar to stop firing along Bangladesh border as it caused panic among Bangladeshis living there.

"We requested China to tell Myanmar to take the necessary measures to stop the firing along Bangladesh Myanmar border and we are happy that recently the incident of firing along the border stopped" he added.

The simplest way to solve the problem is for the Myanmar government to allow China to send peacekeeping troops to Rakhine State. Let the Chinese army protect the security of Rohingya people.
Of course, we also need the other four P5 countries of the Security Council not to use the veto.

The UN peacekeeping missions in a country is supposed to be multinational. I also wonder if the UN sends its peacekeeping troops from a neighboring country.

So, China and/ or India cannot contribute troops in Burma under UN.

Peacekeeping forces need not be multinational. But China needs to send peacekeeping troops in the name of the United Nations, so it needs the approval of the United Nations Security Council.

As for India, they have no right or ability to stop China's peacekeeping forces.

Of course, the presence of Chinese troops in the Bay of Bengal is politically significant. Many countries may not want to see that.

Please do not expect any Chinese or Indian peacekeepers in MM. These two countries have a direct border with MM. So, the UN will not allow such an arrangement.

I dont think they will veto. China should propose it.

Looks like Burma is your Israel. And Pakistan is your Haiti!

BD should not seek (pointless) any geopolitical favours from China nor give it.

Keeping both China and India at equidistance is the right policy.

Unlike the BD PDF fools who think we should put all our eggs in the Chinese basket!

Several autonomous regions in northern Myanmar do have deep relations with China. As for the Central Government of Myanmar, we do not care about it.

You care enough to veto anything against them at the security council :)

Similar way that US does for Israel :)

Given you give us nothing - why does your ambassador feel so entitled?

Why do you people expect China alone to solve the problem between BD and MM for you ? Dont blame your problem with MM on China.

China's interest lies in maintaining stability in the region. In order to maintain stability, we need not only to solve the Rohingya problem, but also to maintain peace in the region. Do you really think that a condemnation statement of the United Nations can solve the Rohingya problem? Such a statement would only lead to more hostility towards the Rohingyas. It is not conducive to the repatriation of Rohingya people.

I don’t expect anything from China because it is a geopolitical Pygmy.

But I don’t expect it to act against us by wielding its veto power. And then have its ambassador act all entitled.

I fully accept that it is not in China’s interest to help BD.

That’s just fine.

But then don’t behave in an entitled way when we cock tease Uncle Sam.

Tell your ambassador there are no free lunches in Dhaka!

Bangladesh is a meek and weak country. So, its people want others to solve their problems. This time, it is China that we want us to help. The last time, it was India that helped it in 1971.

It remains weak today and its people fear the sound of bullets. What can you expect from such a country? Its leadership is unable to face a BD-MM conflict.

Do you really think war in this area can help Bangladesh?

The peaceful settlement of the Rohingya issue is the real help to Bangladesh.

There is only one peaceful solution to the Rohingya problem. Repatriate Rohingya refugees and protect their safety.

You have a brilliant idea to solve the Rohingya issue. But, how do you propose BD to bell this cat?
