Bangladesh distributes Indian aid, sent under Operation Insaniyat, to Rohingya refugees
The government of Bangladesh on Thursday began distributing relief material India sent over for Rohingya refugees in the country.

Earlier this week, India sent more than 100 tonnes of materials as part of the first consignment of humanitarian relief meant for the more than 400,000 ethnic minority Muslims who have fled Myanmar's violence-hit Rakhine state into Bangladesh.

Bangladesh's road transport minister and Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader had recieved the material from Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla, after an Indian Aur Force C -17 aircraft loaded with aid landed in the southeastern port city of Chittagong.

On Thursday, the Bangladesh government, in the presence of several officials from the Indian embassy, began distributing the relief material among the Rohingya refugees. Speaking on the issue, Quader said, "India is with us during any disaster. India should put Myanmar under pressure and take back its citizens."

The relief consists of packets of rice, lentils, biscuits, salt, sugar, soaps, mosquito nets and powdered milk. Each packet weighs around 15kg and India aims to sent a total of 7,000 tonnes of aid material under its 'Operation Insaniyat (Humanity)', sources within the Indian embassy have said.

Bangladesh is dealing with an unprecedented influx of Rohingya refugees. Around 420,000 Rohingya have entered Bangladesh since in the aftermath of the latest spell of violence to erupt in Myanmar's insurgency-affected Rakhine state.

According to the Unicef, which is also running a relief operation, 60 per cent of the Rohingya who recently came over to Bangladesh are children.

Bhai if I do simple math, still India will have to arrange not less than 100 consignment deliveries, dumping all material may not be the feasible due to storage issues and will incur further cost. It might help to keep WIP in check. India is trying to do what Europeans did with Turkey and Australia has also approached to help in similar way.

India sends 1,000 tonnes relief material for Rohingyas
India on Saturday dispatched around 1,000 tonnes of relief material, which can cater for around 62,000 families, for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, an official statement said. The material was loaded on Indian Naval Ship Gharial, which will deliver it to Chittagong in Bangladesh where thousands of Rohinya refugees have come in from Myanmar.


The relief material is in customised family packets, which contain essential items including rations, clothes and mosquito nets.


Earlier, relief material was also sent to Bangladesh through Indian Air Force’s C-17 transport aircraft, to address the humanitarian crisis emanating from the big scale migration of Rohingya Muslims. According to UN, almost 430,000 Rohingyas have fled Myanmar and crossed to Bangladesh since August 25.

India has committed material aid to the tune of 7000 tonnes. However I think 62000 might be incorrect figure, that could be 62000 people or somewhat closer but that again it is based on Indian family sample, Rohingya might have it different.

Thats precisely why it was sent to SHW and not to Nawaz Sharief.

INS Gharial reaches Bangladesh’s Chittagong with 62,000 packs of relief material for Rohingya refugees
Carrying 62,000 packs of relief material as aid, INS Gharial on Saturday reached Bangladesh’s Chittagong to provide assistance to approximately 4,80,000 Rohingya refugees being sheltered along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The relief materials were handed over by the High Commissioner of India to the District Commissioner, Chittagong at a ceremony held on September 28. The offloading process was carried out continuously throughout the day and completed on September 30.

The relief materials were simultaneously loaded onto 54 trucks. The first convoy comprising 21 trucks reached Ukhia on the night of September 29. Another convoy comprising 20 trucks left Chittagong Saturday morning with relief materials and the last convoy of 13 trucks will leave shortly, all bound for Ukhia where it will be distributed by the authorities amongst the displaced people.

The crew members of INS Gharial worked round the clock to ensure timely offloading and further loading onto trucks, while Assistant High Commission at Chittagong provided full assistance for loading the relief materials on trucks and forward dispatch of the convoy. The convoys are being escorted by Bangladesh Army and the relief materials will be offloaded into a shelter/ godown at Ukhia for further distribution.
