Bangladesh Cricket team to join Shahbag Protesters

The Bangladesh Cricket team would join Shahbag on Saturday (tomorrow) to express solidarity with the protesters, demanding the death penalty of Jammat Leader Quader Mollah who was sentenced to life imprisonment for his crime in the 1971 liberation war.
Millions of protesters dubbed Shahbag Avenue “Bangladesh’s Tahrir Square”, to demand the execution of Abdul Quader Mollah, an Islamist leader sentenced to life in prison for war crimes committed during the 1971 independence conflict. The protests have been going on since Tuesday.
Millions of people from all walks of life gathered today’s grand rally at Shahbag to express their solidarity with the protesters. The protesters are demanding capital punishment for all war criminals including Quader Mollah. Protesters announced that they would not return home until the execution order against Abdul Quader Mollah is delivered. They also demand the ban of all types of organizations of Jamaat-e-Islami. The Bangladesh Cricket team would join the outrage tomorrow to express their solidarity with the protesters.


SURGE OF YOUTH: Shahbag in the city turned into a human sea Friday, as a multitude of people, mostly youths, joined the ongoing demonstration there, demanding capital punishment for Abdul Quader Molla and other war criminals.
A person informed on behalf of the cricket team that the members of the cricket team would join the outrage.

The protesters immediately welcomed the decision of cricket team after announcing.

People from all walks of life including freedom fighters, students, teachers, cultural personalities, gathered at Shabag from Tuesday evening with the demand of capital punishment for Quader Mollah instead of life term.

Before this, International Crime Tribunal 2 (ICT) sentenced life time prison to Quader Mollah who accused of crimes, including rape, murder and torture in the libaration war in 1971.

After announcing the verdict, protesters came into the road to vent their anger at the verdict and took oath not to leave the road to fullfill their demand. They are also demanding boycott of Jammat – e- Islam

You need to understand that this sub-forum does not accurately reflect the reality of Bangladesh. Many "Bangladeshi" posters here come from one particular party, Jamat i Islami (who represent 4.6% of votes and only have 2 MPs out of 300 in the Bangladeshi parliament, this party also has 2 MPs: Workers Party of Bangladesh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and this party has 3 MPs: Jatiyo Samajtantrik Dal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

However the way they act and label people you would imagine they represent the majority.

For Pakistanis especially please understand this. The Pakistani people in 1971 were victims of false propaganda by an unelected military junta who fed them false news of constant victories and were thus then shocked when in December 1971 Dhaka fell. The unelected Yahya Khan regime betrayed the Pakistani people in many ways and one of these ways was lying to their people when even senior military commanders would say they knew the loss of "East Pakistan" was just a question of time.

Thus Pakistanis should not be victims yet again of similar distorted propaganda thinking that Bangladeshis are anything like the Jamatis you see on this forum.

Indians, I have often said that I and others such as @madx @ShadowFaux @Banglar Bagh @RiasatKhan etc are "mainstream Bangladeshis".

- None of us support any political party or claim to personally know senior leaders in that party.

- None of us claim to be members of a political party's student wing, unlike one poster here.

- None of us claim we will make money from Bangladeshi politics if a party we support win the elections.

The fact that the Bangladeshi national cricket team is going to the anti-Jamati, anti-war criminals protest tomorrow clearly illustrates this fact. Forget about me, but these cricketeers are just normal mainstream Bangladeshis from different parts of the country and they represent mainstream Bangladesh.

Even if the rezakars and Jamati criminals escape justice then (apart from the fact they cannot avoid divine justice) at the very least the Bangladeshi nation has shown that they hate them, that they are disgusted by them and hold them in utter revulsion.

Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis have joined the protests at Shahbagh, who knows it may even become 1 million.

This is after Jamat used their international connections to get:

- Saudi Arabia to pressurize Bangladesh to free the war criminals.
- The Turkish regime to do the same.
- The Zardari regime in Pakistan.
- Iranian media is supporting the war criminals.

All these regimes may support Jamat but the people of Bangladesh will never accept these traitors and war criminals.

I think that these protests may increase up to 1 million people.

This will send a signal to the regimes of Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

The movement for justice against these war criminals and the movement to ban the extremist "Jamat e Islami" will I think become stronger and more permanent. Social media has been utilized to organize these demonstrations. These protests represent Bangladesh. These protests represent the Bangladeshi people. The national cricket team represent the average Bangladeshi. We will never be bullied by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran etc.

We have better friends, in China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia who are far, far better than any of the regimes above.

We also have good relations with the USA, the EU, Russia, South America, African countries etc.

This movement of the people against war criminals, murderers and rapists will I think solidify from being an ad hoc response to a war crimes trial to a longer term movement for the promotion of civil values against regressive fundamentalism, against evil forces that hate our people and our country. These protests represent Bangladesh but they also represent the educated sector of society even more, the educated urban elite who are the most powerful social group in the country.

We will work, struggle and pray to Allah that one day Jamat e "Islami" the party started by controversial anti-Pakistani mullah, Maudoodi, who later claimed he never opposed Pakistan, will one day be wiped off the face of the earth for ever.

The Jamati thugs on this forum will probably label the cricket team as "Indian dalals", "RAW agents" and "Awami" as they do to all other normal Bangladeshis on this forum.

In the real world the cricket team are normal people who represent the average Bangladeshi.

No offence, I do not think India should comment or get involved in this internal matter of Bangladesh, it will be counter-productive.

Sports teams in general do not get involved in politics and I think that is right.

Governments come and go and the population themselves may be split on certain issues, just morally and business wise (brand image, sales of sports merchandise etc) it doesn't make sense for sportsmen to alienate parts of their country and society or politicians by commenting on political issues or getting involved. They are seen as national property that should be liked by the whole country.

So the fact that the Bangladeshi cricket team, who in comparative terms are quite young, are prepared to do this shows the national depth of feeling in Bangladesh and how widespread all through out society hatred of Jamatis, rezakars and war criminals is. I am also sure that they either have immediate family or extended family who were murdered in 1971. The 1971 war was a national tragedy which is why the entire cricket team as a collective body (rather than one or two members of it) will be going to express their support against the war criminals.

It also shows that Jamatis/rezakars have very little support in Bangladesh otherwise the sports team would not go there as they would run the risk of alienating Jamat (who are highly likely to be in government in 11 months time in a BNP-Jamat coalition), either that or the sports team hate Jamatis so much they don't care if they alienate them.

A friend of mine has made a great proposition as they will be voters in the next election they'll vow to never vote any Jamat or anyone who openly has any connection to Jamaat.They should be shown that they are unwanted in this country.And that is how we can win over them.

Hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis have joined protests in Dhaka to demand the death penalty for a political leader convicted of war crimes.

Protests have grown since Abdul Kader Mullah was given life on Tuesday for crimes including torture, murder and rape during the 1971 independence war.

Supporters of Mullah's party, the Islamist Jamaat-e-Islami, held protests calling for his release.

The party says Mullah is the victim of a political vendetta.

Ten others are on trial, including eight other Jamaat members and two members of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), one a former minister.

They are accused of atrocities during the 1971 war when Bangladesh, then called East Pakistan, fought to secede from Pakistan.

Bloggers and social media enthusiasts in Bangladesh are calling it the "Tahrir of Dhaka". The wide intersection next to the Dhaka University campus where two major avenues converge is actually called Shahbag.

But the events of the last few days have turned this busy intersection into the focal point of one of the biggest protests in the country's history - and the first triggered by social media.

Many people were shocked that Abdul Kader Mullah was not given the death sentence. There was anger among the youth. Some suspected an underhand deal between the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Jamaat.

Others felt the prosecution was poorly prepared and did not present enough evidence for the judges to award the highest punishment available to them.

Many feared that weeks of violence aimed at the police by Jamaat cadres across the country had exerted enough pressure on the judges. Within 24 hours of the verdict, a network of bloggers called on their fellows to gather at Shahbag.

The authorities say the defendants opposed independence and either fought alongside or actively supported the West Pakistan authorities.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made prosecuting war crimes a key goal of her government.

Jamaat is an ally of the BNP, Sheikh Hasina's bitter political rivals.

Mullah is the second defendant to be found guilty by the special tribunal.

Last month, former Jamaat leader Abul Kalam Azad was sentenced to death in absentia.

'Biggest in years'
Thousands have been holding vigils in Dhaka throughout the week calling for a ban on the J-e-I and the death penalty for party leaders on trial, on the grounds that they were involved in mass killings.

The organisers called for a grand rally on Friday, a weekend day in Bangladesh, to urge the authorities to reconsider Mullah's life sentence.

Protesters used social media to boost numbers at the rally.

The BBC's Anbarasan Ethirajan in Dhaka says there has been an unusual outpouring of feeling.

People from all walks of life, with doctors, professors and even sports personalities taking part in what is described as the biggest protest march in recent years, he says.

Shahbag Square in Dhaka has a festive look, with people holding various cultural events as part of the protest, our correspondent adds.


Mullah's supporters clashed with police earlier in the week
"We will not return home unless we get justice, complete justice," Shakil Ahmed, a college student, told the Associated Press news agency.

"I did not see 1971, but those who killed our people and helped Pakistani troops in their effort to halt the creation of Bangladesh should be hanged."

Mullah, 64, the assistant secretary general of Jamaat, was found guilty of being behind a series of killings.

They included massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka that earned him the nickname "koshai [butcher] of Mirpur", and made him one of the more feared Jamaat leaders.

Official estimates say more than three million people were killed in the 1971 war.

(Btw that 3 million figure is a big exaggeration, hundreds of thousands died in the war not millions. For the sake of truth and objectivity the 3 million number is also propaganda that needs to be refuted).










1. This is one of the biggest protests ever in Bangladesh's history.

Kobiraaz claimed that Jamat could gather 1/2 a million people (500,000) which is of course - as usual - nonsense.

Vast majority of Bangladeshis including our cricket team hate Jamat and the war criminals.

2. With the Bangladeshi economy growing in 5-10 years time countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran will not be able to bully us like they are trying to now over Jamati war criminals.

Mass social media would lead to people doing things like organizing a 1 million man march outside the Turkish embassy.

3. Jamatis on here were belittling the Shahbagh protests and ridiculing it, now this BBC report shows that they were lying (as usual).

This sub-forum contains people who completely give a false impression of the real Bangladesh. We are nothing like people like Kobiraaz. We are a peaceful people who want to live in peace with our neighbours.
