A large part of Dhaka's lucrative Muhammadpur area is occupied by non-Bengali Muslims of India and Pakistan arriving here in 1947 after Indian independence, stuck here after 1971. The government has taken up construction work in a planned town with a housing project of Tk 6,000 crore to relocate the unplanned slum dwellers.

The project has been proposed for the implementation in Ahadipur Mouza of Keraniganj. The proposed project has started with acquisition of 3,000 acres of land.

Biharis, who live in the Mohammadpur Geneva camp, will get a modern clean flat in return. However, these flats will be given in long-term installments. It will also create opportunities for permanent or temporary employment in this area for Bihari families.

For this purpose, a scheme has been proposed in the Planning Commission for the construction of residential flats for the rehabilitation of the non-Bengalis living in the Dhaka Mohammadpur Geneva camp. Although Basila is named, they will in fact be transferred to Keraniganj.

The cost of implementing the project has been estimated at Tk. 6100 crore. After the approval of the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), the National Housing Authority will implement the project from this year to June 2022.

Great gesture. Kindly give them full citizenship. This will definitely improve relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

They are already citizen declared by the high court.

Not only are they citizens, their kids are fully functioning Bangla-speaking culturally compatible young folks now having their own babies. Bangladesh is truly an example of inter-ethnic harmony, with inter-ethnic marriages being fairly common. Kind of like Malaysia, but even nicer I'd say.

Can you tell me how far is Keriganj from, say, Gulistan? And how long does it take to travel between two points?
Its opposite to Sadarghat in the other side of the Buriganga after Jinjira. Its not far from Gulistan

If Keraniganj is so near, then the new location for the Muhajirs there will not be that bad. Mohammedpur is to congested to live a civilized life. But, I wonder, if they will be willing to pay back the arrears or new electric bills. I wish they get full-time employment. They used to be quite a hard worker before 1971.

Property price of Mohammadpur is much higher. It will be interesting to see what government is going to do with the land!

Even though the price is higher but there are too many shareholders. Biharis wont mind to leave the place and get a decent rehabilitation. I know some biharis already left the camp and bought houses outside.

Any idea how they will pay for the apartments?

Probably, the govt will sell the Mohammedpur land and with this money, it will build new houses in Keraniganj. By the way, what happened to the ownership of lands and houses in Mohammedpur, Mirpur, etc? All taken by the BAL victors and the original dwellers are now living in the slums.

A Govt body should do something to give the properties back to the original owners. Or they should be compensated with cash money. The Muhajirs are capable people. The compensation money can solve many of their problems.

Don’t take this as an attack but are bengalis living in Pakistan now Pakistani citizens? Curious.

I’ve been to gulistan and keraniganj. You will need bus and boat rides. Average travel time during the day is 4 hours.

My two cents. Major cities in Eastern Europe like Kiev, Moscow, Kharkiv might not be your Sydney, Melbourne or California but they have Huge boulevards, parks and city center planned road construction etc. if Dhaka can be freed up a bit by clearing crowding and introducing these measure the city will improve a lot. Dhaka university areas are favorite of mine because of their integration of city with nature.

I agree with your opinion about road systems. But, here the issue is Bihari rehabilitation in a faraway place where jobs may not be available and they have to commute to Dhaka center to work. How it is possible when the journey takes four hours one way? So, the govt must build better communications/transport facilities before moving these people to Keraniganj, even before starting to build the housing.
