Dhaka, Mar 16 (UNB)-The bilateral trade between Bangladesh and China, which amounted to $12.4 billion in 2017-2018, is expected to reach $18 billion mark by 2021, economists said.

President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Osama Taseer said it when Ambassador of China to Bangladesh Zhang Zuo visited the DCCI auditorium in the capital on Saturday.

According to a press release, Taseer said Bangladesh’s “Look East” Policy is essentially designed to open up new avenues of cooperation with China and the ASEAN region urging Chinese FDI in “RMG product diversification” and allied transfer of technology.

He also urged the world’s second largest economy for quick implementation of duty free, quota free market access to Bangladesh.

Zhang Zuo said China has recently passed the new foreign investment law which is more open and flexible for foreign investors. In 2017-18 Chinas’s FDI to Bangladesh increased and China has invested more in Bangladesh than any other countries.

China is one of the largest partners in mega infrastructure projects in Bangladesh, said Zao adding that about 200 large Chinese companies and 200 Chinese SMEs are in operation in Bangladesh.

He also looks Bangladesh’s vast potentials in fields of blue and coastal economy.

The Chinese Ambassador invited DCCI members to attend the Shanghai Import and Export Fair 2019 in November.

DCCI’s Senior Vice President Waqar Ahmad Choudhury, Vice President Imran Ahmed, Directors Andaleeb Hasan, Alhaj Deen Mohammed, Enamul Haque Patwary, Hossain A Sikder, Engr. Md. Al Amin, Mohammad Bashiruddin, Nuher L. Khan, Shams Mahmud and S.M. Zillur Rahman were present there.

Not many in your country favour a genuine relationship with China. You are just using China to get capitals to develop yourself.

define genuine relationship...
Your extra capital will be useless if you don't invest at the right time and at the right market.
The 3rd world country like us are indebted to China for cheap technology... I will give credit where it is due.

Not true. We do not favor singular china centric philosophy. Our approach irrespective of political persuation is a balanced approach. We are only for ourselves and open to business with everyone. Chinese investment is welcome but we wont ever consider any proposal like srilanka or pakistan that over commits us. BD fiscal policy is slow and steady, we will never become over geared. We know our economy and people, we wont ever borrow too much and wont ever consider giving away any key assets to others. Everything maintains BD control.

China understands this, we are friendly towards china but both of us know that china will not intervene to protect BD and BD wont position itself against india to support china directly in the event of land conflict between the two. No indian troops will cross BD landmass and BD will not pressure the chicken neck to aid china.

Both China and india knows it is in BD and in their respective interest that BD maintains neutrality but close connection to both in economic terms.

BD will remain second largest defense partner with china and will maintain close political alignment with india whilst growing economic relationship with both.

Both china and india gets something from BD and BD profits from both. Either party presures BD and BD will go opposite direction. BD is a maritime nation, it is a democracy and completely linked to the global ecomic system. It has many options to maintain its sovereignty and there is accomodation with both the regional powers. It suits everyone.

BD will never become a chinese pearl to encircle india and it will not facilate indian wish for dominence in the bay or beyond. Either pushes in this front and BD will align with US who would not wish either Indian or chinese hedgemony over the sea lanes in the indian oceans.

In every scenario BD has options. We are not overly reliant on anyone.

I believe Chinese Govt. and people are always seen with a great deal of respect by Bangladeshi people and Govt. but a policy shift did occur after CCP took a stand to not discipline the Myanmarese over ethnic cleansing. This is an issue of contention that needs to be addressed by the CCP.

China cannot champion the rights of the oppressed in Asia, Africa and South America on one hand (per its proclamations), and support ethnic cleansing in a country like Myanmar for narrow economic gains (hydrocarbon reserves off the Myanmar coast) on the other.

This sort of hypocrisy becomes too apparent for all countries (like Bangladesh) to ignore. Honestly, even if the Rohingya did not have roots in Bangladesh ethnically, Bangladesh would still give them shelter. It is a principle of humanity. While CCP decided to side with Myanmar for relatively minor economic gains and support ethnic cleansing which is universally against basic human rights.

This way China has lost credibility for moral leadership over the US.

Well China has officially stated policy of non-interference. and their actions or the lack of it was along that line.

No one was talking about 'interfering'. However the Myanmarese are a Chinese client state and recipient of military technology. They can be 'rebuked'. China could use it's hold over the Myanmarese. Or you are saying that the Chinese won't use their influence? I am sure they can at least negotiate under the table diplomatically.

In 2011 China left behind projects and materials worth $4.5 billion in Libya, all they did is pull their citizens out. I am not sure they ever were able to salvage anything from that loss.

Chinese so called ''non interference policy'' is just a hogwash. China pull ahead this ''non interference policy'' only when there is a question of taking a right stand in international affairs. otherwise they interfere very enthusiastically to prop up the autocratic dictatorship around the world by helping them with it's unlimited supply of cash, weapons and diplomatic supports. Isn't these are 'interference' in favor of despotic regimes?

Just yesterday Malaysian PM Mahathir Mohammad warned Philippines President about the Chinese debt trap. Many African countries are also waking up to the realities of Chinese debt trap laden neo-colonialism. Those who simplify the logic that, ''US is evil, so whoever oppose it are inherently good, so China is good'' are simply delusional. Every country need to be careful dealing with Chinese money. China do not care about transparency at handing out large amount of debt to the corrupt, despotic govt. in exchange of it's natural resources or strategic infrastructures. In these cases, only the common people of those countries are going to loose when payback times come.China may be a big power, but it is not a responsible power. It do not care about world peace and prosperity, only about it's narrow national interests.

So, our relation should be strictly economical with China and every Chinese project need a lot of scrutiny by the govt., civil society and media.

China's "non-interference in foreign internal affairs" policy began in the 1950s.

Proposed by former PM Zhou Enlai.

On how China uses the "non-interference policy". This is China full respect for sovereign states. China does not interfere in your choice. You are free to choose your political position, camp, reject or accept Chinese investment. China respects your choice.

And tell you a secret. Most of the world's dictators are supported by the United States.

Tell you a secret again. If you're not in America's interest............

Tell you a secret again and again. The US also supports Suu Kyi.

Finally, tell you a secret. China is not a big power, China is only P5.

@Bilal9 Recently, I have often helped Bangladeshi members understand the world. The world does not believe in tears... so cooperation and development are important. Don't get too involved in international conflicts.

Why it is Sweden and Spain in a BD-China trade thread and what BD community is like in Sweden? Do they work menial and you work in a air-conditioned room shouting orders? Why a fellow like you have to criticize people sincerely doing jobs in Sweden or Spain irrespective the type of jobs? They are not stealing money as the mean Indians love to do in foreign countries.

I see in Japan, Pakistanis work mostly in Pakistan-owned car export businesses, Indians/ Nepalese work in the restaurant kitchens and most Bangladeshis work in the factories. Why bad to work in factories and why dishwashing is better? Factory job is more manly than the dishwashing job which fits squarely with the protein-short Indians like you.

What are you doing in Canada? Sweeping the streets there because with a pot belly and fat *** you are not even fit to work in a kitchen? Do not please insult others for whatever works they do unless they are dishonest. Dishonesty thy name is Indians. No division of labor, please in South Asian style!!

Less number of projects with Chinese money is better for Bangladesh. Japan has a program to spend $270 billion by 2022 on infrastructure projects throughout Asia and Africa. Japan has better technology than any other in Asia.

However, we may have to depend upon China for our arms, probably which the Chinese will play trick with us. BD needs to diversify its source of arms and ammunition, too.
