Bangladesh Bought ‘Obsolete’ Chinese Submarines: Russian expert

That is the latest version, Kilo Project 636.

Rivers are dredged more frequently than any other country, being that we have so many and quite a few large ones.

About 700 rivers including tributaries flow through the country constituting a waterway of total length around 24,140 kilometres (15,000 mi).
The old ones cost at least 300 million each, that is 100 million$ more than what BD paid for two Ming class.. another thing to remember is that all countries have to send their Kilos to Russia for repair and overhaul..
Bangladesh starts small but smart, it will at least be able to repair its first subs by itself with help from Chinese technicians and Engineers..Also BD can use that extra 100 million to add some sophisticated electronics on these Mings..

Bangladesh is modernizing it armed forces and procuring weapons from overseas. "The delivery of the first Chinese submarine will make the country (Bangladesh) dependent for more arms from China.

Please see my earlier post which I updated. Kilos have too many issues, SEVMASH has severe QC concerns as evidenced by Indian Kilo problems.

KILOs now cost 250 million a copy and that's what the Vietnamese and Chinese paid.

should have bought a bettrr one , in the event of a globle conflict , india and bangladesh have to work togeather to safegourd our lands...

I think this is the right thought. Take BD as an effective regional defence partner.

Something is better than nothing..this is first step for BD navy to begin operating submarines...so its the start of building capability..not the end of it..my warmest congrats to BD.

Could have been better if those could have used to save some muslim rohingya's of Myanmar. But still not interested of waging war against them.

I was speaking to a BN navy man yesterday. Although retired now for 5 years what he told me was very illuminating.

His opinions were as follows. The mings represents the culmination of 20 year effort by BN to induct sub.

He primarily blamed BNP for lack of will to induct submarines, according to him there has been serious continuous offers on the table from several European countries for both refurbished and new subs.

BD reluctance has been caused by various things at various times. Subs were put on the back burner to develop the army for UN roles post first Iraq wars. BD wanted the military to be as self funding as possible and they could not figure out how subs could further that. Also IN navy was much smaller than what it is now and the only navy that mattered in the region was USN operating from dieago Garcia.

Second objection came even though submariners were trained in late 90's - early 2000s from inability to agree how much money can be appropriated illegally from the deal. BD economically was not doing that great and was under pressure for being the most corrupt country in the world. Additionally what money was left after the army was channelled to the BAF with particular emphasis on logistical capabilities again to support UN.

The random purchase of BNS bongobondhu was coupled with massive amount of kickbacks for the BAL leadership. It was purchased when money could have been better spent getting more surface assets. BNS bongobondhu was purchased against navy wishes and plans.

The subsequent BNP period was characterised by non descisions and massive levels of graft and the military being completely ignored. BNP did nothing whilst Indian and Burmese claimed and intruded on BD territory and blocked exploration.

The military rule period gave form to proper planning and a strategic vision.

Sub purchase was subsequently delayed by the BAL regime awaiting the maritime demarcations to be settled and order was placed within weeks of settlement.

Mings were purchased because they were cheap. BN does not view them as training sub. They will he in service for 20+ years and the refurbishment was carried out with that in mind.

In future he expects further 4 refurbished mings to join BN with 2 new Chinese subs joining. He expects in the medium term BD plan is to have 6 subs.

Looks like the BNP needs to improve its Military Upgrade policy. Record shows they buy almost nothing for defense.

Currently BNP consists of only SOLD-OUTS, wannabe high commands. They cannt even make up their mind for anything concrete, let alone having courage to do sth. Too bad for BD as we really dont have much choice in political arena.

Many thanks for sharing the information you have received from a retired military Officer. It was enlightening. I have also the similar opinion about what the Officer said about the BNP era. There was no real purchase of military hardware during all the BNP period.

The two years of de facto military rule had set the priorities for the induction of weapons for all the branches of armed forces. Hope to see BN inducts a total of 8 subs in a short time if, of course, the economy grows faster.

to me these ming class subs are pretty good and effective in shallow water like bay of bengal, arabian sea or south china sea....they have no AIP system so they cant remain submerged 40-45 days like AIP fitted submarines bt still can do their job in bay of bengal which is not far from bay and another thing ming class submarine's hull is made like romeo class but the sensors sonars etc are quite new because its 1990 subs not 1960 so hull really dosnt matter.

.
BN only needs to do piracy operations around Bay of Bengal and has not international obligations. This is way better than they need so a good Choice Bangladesh.

.
The Chinese navy used the 035G project submarines in combat training in 1990-2000. They were equipped with new torpedoes and sonar stations copied from the French sonars.
Yep and that's exactly what they will do for BN, untill such time as better boats come along. This is what Singapore did with the Challenger class (ex Swedish Sjoormen boats), prior to arrival of Archer class. See also Malaysia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Malaysian_Navy#Scorp.C3.A8ne_submarines

Anyway, their presence still means resources will have to be diverted/devoted to keeping track of them.

.
Submarines need a few years to absorb: the engineering support, training and strategy. These are excellent as beginners.

The price won't break the bank.

For a potential adversary it is a major shock, it bring a whole new level of threat.
