Bangladesh Bought ‘Obsolete’ Chinese Submarines: Russian expert

This is a good start by BD. Nothing else will give them the experience of operationally deploying subs at this price.

Their war value is difficult to judge though as that would depend the the adversary (i hope not India lol).

Type 035G: Program begun in 1985, and the first unit with pennant number 356 was launched in 1989, entering service in December 1990, and state certification received in 1993. This is the first Type 035 series to have anti-submarine (ASW) capability. The primary weaponry for Type 035G is Yu-3 torpedo, and French sonar DUUX-5 and its Chinese built version were used on later units, 12 of which were completed between 1990 and 1999. The last unit with pennant number 308 was lengthened by 2 meters to add a section for AIP tests

Bangladesh Navy has ordered two off the shelf Type-035G submarines from China in 2013 worth $203 million. The boats was under refit and Bangladesh took delivery on 14th November, 2016 of its first submarines, bought from China. The Pennant Numbers of Bangladesh Navy Submarines are: S161 & S162

Quotations from Wiki

"Air-independent propulsion (AIP) is any marine propulsion technology that allows a non-nuclear submarine to operate without access to atmospheric oxygen (by surfacing or using a snorkel). AIP can augment or replace the diesel-electric propulsion system of non-nuclear vessels."

"AIP can be retrofitted into existing submarine hulls by inserting an additional hull section. AIP does not normally provide the endurance or power to replace atmospheric dependent propulsion, but allows longer submergence than a conventionally propelled submarine."

So, the BD 035G submarines have been added with AIP system that enhances its submerging capability. These two have anti-submarine capabilities as well, but I am not sure they are fitted with missiles.

Bangladesh Navy’s Ming Class Subs

Dhaka is purchasing two submarines from China in a deal that has portends of increasing militarisation of the Bay of Bengal. Beijing had asked for $203 million when two sides began final negotiations in November 2013, according to officials. Dhaka managed to reduce the submarines’ price by $10 million, or around Tk 80 crore, after bargaining with Beijing early this year as per a New Age Bangladesh report.

Dhaka has finally signed a deal with Beijing for the purchase of two submarines for $193 million. These submarines of Ming class will have capacity of firing anti-ship missiles from its torpedo tubes and are to be delivered in 2019 as per the New Age. Bangladesh Navy personnel are already carrying out submarine training in China as per reports.

The Ming class of Chinese submarines is an adaptation of the diesel or electric Romeo class submarine built by the Soviet Union, which in turn was based on the German Type XXI submarine of World War II. Reports indicate that Bangladesh will be purchasing the advanced version of Ming class submarine, Type 035G which has low acoustic signature with larger space for weaponry. The capability of the sub may be limited to coastal defence and surveillance possibly the task envisaged by Bangladesh Navy.

bangladesh going to buy 2 more new modern sub by 2019 to become a deterrent underwater force along with surface force. ;)

Not a big fan of Ming Subs.Ming is a old design and according to western experts,"Extremely Noisy".It doesn't have a good record either, only a decade ago one Ming lost with all hands aboard(And remember,China doesn't publish these kind of accidents, unfortunately its a group of civilians who first noticed and informed Navy) and reason according to PLAN was "Mechanical Failure". Though time to time internal blast and engine trouble which exhausted entire oxygen has surfaced as reason.

For training purpose, its Ok.And China marketed this version as having "Lower acoustic signature" than previous ones.

Clearly this Russian Expert doesnt understand our priorities. We do not have any threat and We only bought Sub for having the exposure and experience of operating Submarines.

There was no better choice than this.

We did not buy these subs to fight in a war lol...these are just to teach us the A B C D of submarines, and for that, these obsolete cheap junks, whatever you may label them as, they are good enough for us.

Of course its gonna be obsolute, first all its Chinese subs and 2nd its only 200million cost

according to western experts,"Extremely Noisy"

No, Ming 035 is not noisy at all. All diesel engines are noisy. But, a diesel-electricity combination is a super technology, no worse than a nuclear operated sub. When operated by battery 035 creates less noise than a swimming shark. Can you send us a reliable link to support your view?

Wow...a Russian 'expert'.

Absolutely everyone KNOWS and has KNOWN for a long time these subs weren't going to scare anyone. They were bought on the cheap for training purposes.

BS, Type035G is an electric submarine with AIP system. If someone say extremely noisy. Most likely he know nothing about electric submarine and just bad mouth without any insight. Accident do happen due to inexperience or testing of new device. If by your theory, kilo shall be a crap since IN just blow up one few years ago?

This is the exactly the sub that surface few km away from a US carrier fleet few years ago.
