Dhaka, Jun 8 (UNB) - Bangladesh-born Doly Begum has been elected a member of the provincial parliament in Canada’s Scarborough Southwest.
Doly Begum, a candidate from National Democratic Party (NDP), bagged 19,751 votes to become the first ever Bangali to win in the elections, defeating a former high-ranking Toronto police official and a veteran Liberal MPP in Scarborough Southwest in the election held on Thursday.
Doly, who was the chief coordinator of the province-wide Keep Hydro Public campaign, served as co-chair of the Scarborough Health Coalition and vice-chair of the Warden Woods Community Centre, reports The Toronto Star.
Scarborough Southwest has a population of 110,280.
She went to Canada as at the age of 11 with her parents and younger brother from Moulvibazar district in Bangladesh and has lived in Scarborough most of her life.
