Bangladesh bans Zakir Naik's 'Peace' mobile phones

DHAKA: Bangladesh authorities have banned controversial Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s Peace mobile phone, days after banning his Peace TV from airwaves and online, said a media report.

“These phones cannot be allowed anymore because there’s a clear instruction from the government to stop all kinds of publicity of Zakir Naik,” bdnews24.com quoted Bangladesh telecoms regulator BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmood as saying on Wednesday.

Naik vexed Bangladesh after his speeches were found to have inspired terrorists involved in the July 1 Dhaka cafe massacre in which 22 persons including a 19-year-old Indian girl were killed.

Beximco Group imports Naik’s Peace mobile phones marketed as “Islamic mobile handsets”, the website of the brand says that the phone comes loaded with options to access Naik’s Peace TV sermons in English, Hindi and Urdu.

The handset also comes packed with Islamic wallpapers, access to the Quran and reminders about prayer timings and other miscellaneous things.

The website considers Beximo Group as the sole Bangladesh importer and offers the address of the group office as Dhanmondi Bell Tower, Dhaka, bdnews24.com reported.

A senior BTRC official said Beximco had imported about 500 mobile phones in 2014 but none since then, although it had applied for the renewal of the permit.

Another importer, Noha Enterprise, was also known to import the mobile phones. However, they flaunt a different logo.

According to the rules, the BTRC permission is mandatory before a mobile handset brand is allowed to operate in Bangladesh.

The BTRC was yet to be furnished with samples of the set before the International Mobile Equipment (IME) number was allotted and the decks cleared to allow spectrum access.

At least two terrorists involved in the attack in the upscale Gulshan locality were known to have been inspired by Naik’s speeches and sermons, prompting the government to clamp down on his publicity mechanisms in the country.

জামায়াত নেতাদের প্রতিষ্ঠিত পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজে জাতীয় সঙ্গীত বাজে না। মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাস পড়ানো হয় নিজেদের মতো করে। এমনকি এই স্কুলের পাঠ্যক্রমে ইংরেজি বা আরবি শেখাতে গিয়ে তালেবান এবং আইএস জঙ্গিদের গল্প ‘লেসন স্পিড’ হিসেবে পড়ানো হয়।

সম্প্রতি বরিশালের পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজের শিক্ষা কার্যক্রম সম্পর্কে খোঁজ নিতে গিয়ে এমন তথ্যই উঠে এসেছে।

জাকির নায়েকের পিস টিভি এদেশে খুব জনপ্রিয়। এরই সুযোগ নিয়ে চ্যানেলটির নামের সঙ্গে মিল রেখে প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয় পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজ। বরিশালে এর শাখা ক্যাম্পাস খোলা হয় মাত্র এক বছর আগে। তবে প্রতিষ্ঠানটির কার্যক্রম শুরু করার সময় ঘোষণা দেওয়া হয়, পিস টিভির উদ্যোক্তা ড. জাকির নায়েকের ফাউন্ডেশনের তত্ত্বাবধানে এটি পরিচালিত হবে। এ ঘোষণার কারণে অতি দ্রুত শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানটিতে শিক্ষার্থীর সংখ্যা বাড়তে থাকে।

সরেজমিন অনুসন্ধানে জানা গেছে, বরিশাল নগরীর ৪৭ কলেজ অ্যাভিনিউয়ের জিমি কটেজ নামে একটি ভবনটি ভাড়া নিয়ে চালানো হচ্ছে পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজের কার্যক্রম। তবে নির্দিষ্ট লোকজনের বাইরে কাউকে এ ক্যাম্পাসে প্রবেশ করতে দেওয়া হয় না। এছাড়া এ স্কুলে জাকির নায়েকের লেকচারের নির্বাচিত অংশ পাঠ্য হিসেবে পড়ানো হয়।

অনুসন্ধানে জানা গেছে, বইতে মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাস যেমনই লেখা থাকুক না কেন, শ্রেণিকক্ষে শিক্ষকরা ভিন্নভাবে তা ব্যাখ্যা করেন। এ স্কুলে জাতীয় সঙ্গীতও পরিবেশন করা হয় না।

‘জামায়াতি চিন্তাধারা প্রভাবিত পাঠ্যক্রম’ অনুসারে বিভিন্ন ‘জিহাদ’ বা যুদ্ধের চুম্বুকাংশ প্রায় প্রতিদিন শিশুদের শেখানো হয়। এছাড়া ভাষা হিসেবে বাংলা, ইংরেজি ও আরবি শেখানো হয়।তবে ইংরেজি ও আরবিই সেখানে বেশি গুরুত্ব পায়।

শিক্ষার্থীদের অভিযোগ, এখানে ইংরেজি ও আরবি শিক্ষার প্রতি বেশি গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়। সে তুলনায় বাংলাভাষা কম গুরুত্ব পায়। এমনকি ইংরেজি বা আরবি শেখাতে গিয়ে ইরাক, ইরান, সিরিয়া বা আফগানিস্তানে তালেবান এবং আইএস জঙ্গিদের গল্প ‘লেসন স্পিড’ হিসেবে পড়ানো হয়।

এ বিষয়ে একাধিক অভিভাবক অভিযোগ করেন, পিস স্কুলে লেখাপড়ার কৌশল ভিন্ন এবং এখানে অনেক কিছুই শেখানো হয়, যা স্বাভাবিক শিক্ষা কার্যক্রমের সঙ্গে সঙ্গতিপূর্ণ নয়। তবে দুটি কারণে তারা ছেলে-মেয়েদের সেখানে ভর্তি করিয়েছেন। প্রথমত, আরবি ও ইংরেজি ভাষাটা রপ্ত হচ্ছে এবং সেই সঙ্গে নৈতিক শিক্ষাটাও তারা পাচ্ছে।

এ বিষয়ে জেলা শিক্ষা কর্মকর্তা লুৎফুর নাহার আফরোজ জানান, কিন্ডারগার্টেন স্কুলগুলো তাদের আওতাভুক্ত নয়। তারপরও কেউ অভিযোগ করলে বিষয়টি ঊর্ধ্বতন কর্তৃপক্ষকে জানানো হবে।

এদিকে,একটি নির্ভরযোগ্য সূত্র জানায়, বরিশালের এ স্কুলে ২১ জন শিক্ষকের মধ্যে ১৯ জনই জামায়াতের সমর্থক, যেখানে দুই শতাধিক শিক্ষার্থী রয়েছে। এখানকার পাঠ্যক্রম অন্যান্য সরকারি ও বেসরকারি স্কুলের চেয়ে আলাদা। এমনকি বোর্ডের সঙ্গেও মেলে না। সরকার স্বীকৃত পাঠ্যক্রম প্রচারণায় ব্যবহৃত হলেও প্রতিষ্ঠানটি মূলত ‘জামায়াতি চিন্তাধারা প্রভাবিত পাঠ্যক্রম’ অনুসারে পরিচালিত হয়।

জানা গেছে, এর আগে বরিশালের পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজের চেয়ারম্যান ছিলেন জামায়াত মনোভাবাপন্ন সরকারি বিএম কলেজের গণিত বিষয়ের শিক্ষক মোশারেফ হোসেন।

এ প্রতিষ্ঠানে তার সম্পৃক্ততা বিএম কলেজ কর্তৃপক্ষ জানতে পারার পর তিনি (মোশারেফ) পদত্যাগ করেন। তবে নেপথ্যে এখনও তিনিই প্রতিষ্ঠানটি চালাচ্ছেন বলে স্থানীয়রা অভিযোগ করেন।

বর্তমানে বরিশালের পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজের অধ্যক্ষ হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছেন টিআইবির বোর্ড অব ট্রাস্টির বরিশালের সদস্য এবং সচেতন নাগরিক কমিটি বা ‘সনাক’-এর বরিশাল শাখার সাবেক সভাপতি জামায়াত ঘরানার প্রফেসর এম মোয়াজ্জেম হোসেন।

এ বিষয়ে জানতে স্কুলে গিয়ে তাকে পাওয়া যায়নি। পরে তার মোবাইল ফোনে কল করা হলেও তিনি তা রিসিভ করেননি। ফলে এ প্রসঙ্গে তার কোনও বক্তব্য পাওয়া যায়নি।

বরিশালের পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজের অফিস ব্যবস্থাপক শহিদুল ইসলাম বলেন, আমাদের স্কুলের সঙ্গে জাকির নায়েক বা জামায়াতের কোনও কানেকশন নেই।

তবে নাম প্রকাশ না করার শর্তে অন্য এক কর্মকর্তা জানান, এ স্কুলে শিবির বা জামায়াতের সুপারিশ ছাড়া কিছুই হয় না।

অন্যদিকে, পিস স্কুল কমিটির নেতারা বলছেন, এ স্কুলের সঙ্গে জাকির নায়েকের ফাউন্ডেশনের কোনও সস্পৃক্ততা নেই।

তাহলে পিস স্কুল পরিচালনা করছেন কারা, এ প্রশ্নের উত্তর খুঁজতে গিয়ে জানা যায়,ইনভাইট পিস লিমিটেড নামে জামায়াত প্রভাবিত একটি প্রতিষ্ঠান পরিচালনা করছে পিস স্কুল অ্যান্ড কলেজ বরিশাল শাখা।

এ প্রতিষ্ঠানটির (ইনভাইট পিস লিমিটেড)চেয়ারম্যান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন ছাত্রশিবিরের ১৯৯১-৯২ সেশনের ১১তম সাবেক কেন্দ্রীয় সভাপতি আবু জাফর মুহাম্মদ ওবায়েদুল্লাহ। বিভিন্ন সময় ছাত্রশিবিরের অনুষ্ঠানে তাকে দেখা গেছে। ছাত্রশিবিরের মুখপত্র ছাত্রসংবাদেও নিয়মিত লেখালেখি করেন তিনি।

তবে কয়েকদিন আগে সংবাদমাধ্যমে বিষয়টি নিয়ে আলোচিত হলে তাকে সরিয়ে নতুন চেয়ারম্যান করা হয় জাহাঙ্গীরনগর বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পদার্থবিদ্যা বিভাগের সদ্য অবসরপ্রাপ্ত শিক্ষক অধ্যাপক মীর আকরামুজ্জামানকে। এ শিক্ষকের বিরুদ্ধেও জামায়াতের রাজনীতির সঙ্গে যুক্ত থাকার অভিযোগ আছে।

তবে তিনি জানান,পিস স্কুলের বরিশাল ক্যাম্পাসের সঙ্গে নানাভাবে যুক্ত থাকলেও এর চেয়ারম্যান পদের দায়িত্ব তিনি গ্রহণ করেননি। তিনি ওই স্কুলের পরিচালনা সংক্রান্ত কোনও পদেও নেই।

মীর আকরামুজ্জামান আরও জানান, পিস স্কুলের একাডেমিক বিভিন্ন কার্যক্রমে তিনি সাপোর্ট দিতেন। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে, সিলেবাস তৈরি, শিক্ষক নির্বাচন, শিক্ষকদের প্রশিক্ষণ, বুক লিস্ট তৈরি ইত্যাদি। এই শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে বিভিন্ন মতাদর্শের লোকজনও যুক্ত আছেন বলে তিনি দাবি করেন।

তার দাবি, জাকির নায়েক বা তার ফাউন্ডেশনের সঙ্গে পিস স্কুলের কোনও সম্পর্ক নেই। স্থানীয় বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তির আর্থিক সহযোগিতায় এ স্কুল ও কলেজের কর্মকাণ্ড পরিচালিত হয়।

এ বিষয়ে বরিশাল কোতোয়ালি থানার ওসি আওলাদ হোসেনের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করা হলে তিনি বাংলা ট্রিবিউনকে বলেন, পুলিশ এখনও এ ব্যাপারে কোনও অভিযোগ পায়নি। তবে শিক্ষাপ্রতিষ্ঠানটির ওপরে নজর রাখা হচ্ছে। সুনির্দিষ্ট অভিযোগ ও প্রমাণ পেলে যথাযথ ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।

DHAKA: Bangladesh on Wednesday launched a probe on schools bearing the name 'Peace', suspecting them to be linked with controversial Indian Islamic preacher Zakir Naik's 'Peace TV' which was banned this week over allegations of inspiring terrorists.

Though the government does not have any specific data on how many schools are being operated with the word 'Peace' in their names, an official said 28 schools in Bangladesh have 'Peace' in their names.

The schools, in the capital Dhaka and in other parts of the country, are allegedly being operated in line with the controversial Islamic preacher's ideals by adding 'Peace' to their names, bdnews24.com reported.

The government is now inquiring into the activities of the so-called 'Peace schools', the report said.

Intelligence agencies had been asked to inquire into the 20 'Peace Schools' spotted by the ministry in Dhaka.

"If these schools actually follow Zakir Naik's ideals, they will face action," an offiaial said.

Bangladesh on Sunday banned Mumbai-based Naik's channel after reports that "provocative" speeches inspired some of the militants who carried out the country's worst terror attack at a cafe here.

50-year-old Doctor-turned Naik's speeches are believed to have inspired some of the Bangladeshi militants, who killed 22 people, mostly foreigners, at an upscale restaurant in Dhaka on July 1.

The Dhaka education board authorities said they only approved temporarily an English medium school at Lalmatia to operate under the name Peace School. The others do not have any such permission, the report said.

"We are inquiring (about such schools)," education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said.

Dhaka education board chairman Mahbubur Rahman also said the board would check on the nature of such schools.

An education ministry official said none of these 'Peace Schools' in Dhaka had applied for permission.
