Up to 200 injured in escalating violence

DHAKA: The police ban on BNP’s protest rallies in Dhaka and other metropolitan cities on Saturday had sparked violent protests on Sunday outside the capital, resulting four deaths in Chandpur and Laxmipur in police action and up to 200 were injured elsewhere.(The Independent)

In Chandpur, two people were killed and 30 injured when police opened fire on BNP protestors in the district town. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries later in hospital raising the death toll in Chandpur alone to three, according to police and hospital sources. One of the dead was a rickshaw puller and another a BNP activist, both succumbed to their bullet wounds in Sadar Hospital, they said, adding some of the wounded victims carried bullet wounds. The third dead victim was identified as Abul Kashem,60, a leader of BNP's Union Parishad unit.

In Laxmipur, a BNP-backed Jubadal activist was also killed in police firing during similar violent police-BNP clashes that left some 100 injured, including an unspecified number of police and journalists.

In Banderban, 30 people, including 10 cops, were injured in clashes between BNP activists and police in the district town Sunday morning over holding mass procession programme.

In Borguna, five people, including police, were injured during clashes with the law enforcers.

In Kurigram, the agitated activists of BNP and Jamaat set fire to a police vehicle during the sporadic clashes that left some 60 people injured. Among the injured was OC of Kurigram Sadar Thana AM Aminul Huq, one news agency reported.

In Brahmanbaria, BNP brought out separate processions and there was no untoward incident till noon, our correspondent said. But an agency reported that opposition activists clashed with police at one stage at the district town's Kalibari road crossing and that some 10 were people were injured.

Similar reports of violence were reported from Chittagong, Rangamati, Tangail, Kishoreganj, Jamalpur, Sunamganj, Natore, Bagerhat, Nilphamari and Madaripur.

Among them, 20 people were injured in Tagail, 10 in Jamalpur, 10 in Kishoreganj and five in Sunamganj. Three BNP activists were arrested in Bagerghat during police-BNP clashes.

Well no one's innocent here. We don't know who started the clashes: is it the police or jubodol/shibir?

But it's more probable that the police had orders to shoot and instill fear among the protestors.

My condolences goes to the family of the poor rikshaw pullers always getting caught in the crossfire.
