Army to run taxis

In a desperate bid to improve taxicab service, the government has decided to involve Bangladesh Army to launch a new taxicab service for the capital and Chittagong metropolis.

Under the new scheme, the army will import 5,000 good quality AC and non-AC taxicabs — 3,000 for Dhaka and rest for Chittagong — from Japan.

“The import is expected to begin from this October,” Communications minister Obaidul Quader told a function in the capital’s Engineers’ Institute yesterday.

He said the government had accepted the army proposal considering the fact that the disciplined force would be able to operate the service in a systematic and secured manner.

An army delegation led by its chief has recently met the communications minister at the Setu Bhaban and formally placed the proposal to run the taxicab service in the two major cities, which seriously lacked the service.

As per the primary discussion, a memorandum of understanding will be signed between the army and the communications ministry to outline the routes, fares, meters and 24-hour operation.

Sources in the ministry said a central system would be established to monitor each cab through GPS and video cameras.

There would also be a hotline option so that anyone could call for a cab anytime from anywhere in the two cities, said the sources, adding that the good quality cabs would be deployed at airports and railway stations.

Talking to The Daily Star, the communications minister said the Army Welfare Trust would invest in importing the cabs.

He said, “Retired officers and drivers of the army will be engaged to operate the service, which will be monitored by the communications ministry.”

A total of 5,000 new Global Positioning System (GPS) taxi-cabs are likely to run in Dhaka and Chittagong city from October.

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader came up with the disclosure at an inter-ministry meeting in city’s engineer’s institute on Monday.

He said, “A total of 3000 taxi-cabs will be allocated for the capital and 2000 for port city Chittagong. People will get 24-hour service by the taxi-cabs, including up to date technologies like GPS.”

The ruling Awami League lawmaker also said, “The ministry primarily approved a proposal on GPS taxi-cabs by ‘army welfare trust’ and the service will conduct by ex-army officials and employees.”

The inter-ministry meeting was held to ensure safe journey for the home bound people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Railway Minister Mujibul Haque, State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku and Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed attended the meeting.

I would give them control of the entire railway system....good for the people good for the army!

Good move, the general population get a secure well managed service, and those drivers and officers retiring early get employment, win win for except the corrupt mafia that try to run it now. If only we could get the airforce to do the same with Biman, and get the navy to manage the ports.

Not a good move in my opinion. Army should focus only on the defense related issues, not the economy. By the way who will drive the Taxi? Soldiers or new recruited driver??

Good! The Army should increasingly involve itself in business and trade. It's a nice gesture that a delegation from Army headed by the Army Chief lobbied for a profit organization for some business advantage. Is anyone here aware of a BBC documentary called 'Fauzi Banijyo'? If so plz share the link with us.

Many armies have small commercial ventures...And NO soldiers will not be driving taxies....this will be just like a regular cab company just owned by the military....nothing else! The Army Welfare trust already has other businesses ranging from Banks to real-estate to foods etc.

btw, did anyone notice that the OP first implied the deal was initiated by the govt and then contradicted it by mentioning it was a military proposal?

I think both of the statements may be true. The govt was perhaps seeking to win the Army's favor somehow and persuaded the Army to come with this proposal. Win-Win
