What's new

Bangladesh announced 2.36 billion USD new defence budget.

as abig economy that's % is enough but other small economy here are spending more like Sri Lanka 2010 3.1 and in 2013 2.7 % of GDP Pakistan is around 3%.

India Myanmar potential militancy(though very remote possibility ) and may be Pakistan. ;) :D
Hmm..nice.

.
2.36 billion usd actually make 1.07 percent of our GDP.
We have to defend ourselves against China and Pakistan. You have what? Piranha? Shark?

You don't spend anything out of GDP. You spend out of revenue.
Bangladesh has a piss-poor Tax/GDP ratio of 8.5%. Which means that you spend 12.6% of tax revenues on Defense.
India spends 1.75% with Tax/GDP of 17.7%, meaning only 9.89% of tax revenues are spent on defense, that despite the two above mentioned nuclear-power threats. There are other modes of revenue, but they are less prominent and sustainable.

.
Bangladesh 'defense' itself is a confusing term for me.
Who is Bangladesh's no. 1 adversary and Bangladeshi defense strategists make their policies keeping which country or entity in mind ?

The enemy depends on quality of stuff they smoke that particular time. If It is pot, it is probably India. If they do hashish, then the paranoia from hashish will make everyone an enemy !!!!

.
Spend it back on public, you have no real enemy.

.
:undecided::undecided: but why... who's your enemy bongla guys

Is Bangladesh involved in any active conflict?

Why spending some much money on Defence, India has two major enemies with nuclear power and that's the reason... What yours?? Use this money in infrastructure and renewable energy development.

BD has the largest share of peace keepers in the world. It didnt come out of thin air without spending in modern equipments. And BD has a culture of 1000 years of rule by foreign invaders starting from Sena dynasty. So we cant take the chance again.

To answer based on facts, the no 1 adversary are the Saudi and Jamaat funded Madrassas which operate independently and follows its own curriculum. They are producing militants at home.

however if you ask the armed forces personnel, they would most likely say Myanmar and ______ ..

The _____ is based on which party you are aligned to. If AL, than the adversary might be Pakistan and if BNP it might be India.. although neither is true.

Our defence spending is only 1.1% of GDP - one of the lowest in the world.

Every country must have a military, even if it is not that strong like BD currently.

That is what we are doing. Armed forces create lots of job and assist in disaster and nation building.
