Bangladesh is among the 10 worst countries for workers, according to a report by labour rights group International Trade Union Confederation or ITUC.
The ITUC Global Rights Index 2017 report states that the continued suffering inflicted by the government and employers on trade unionists in the country led to Bangladesh receiving a rating of 5, which means that workers have ‘no guarantee of rights’.

The other countries on the 10-worst list are Colombia, Egypt, Guatemala, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Turkey and the UAE.

India, Pakistan and Myanmar also received a rating of 5 from the ITUC, while Nepal and Sri Lanka scored a better rating of 3 -- ‘regular violator of rights’.

“In too many countries, fundamental democratic rights are being undermined by corporate interests,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow.

The ITUC report published on June 13 says police brutality, mass arrests and discrimination are the main contributors to the repression of labour organisation in Bangladesh.

It highlights the reaction to the garment workers protests in Ashulia in December 2016 as a major example of such repression.

Thirty-five union leaders and workers’ rights activists were detained following the week-long strike and complaints were filed against more than 1,000.

@Nilgiri Add this to your kitty.

Dude, India and China were classified in the same rating too heh...though these 10 listed with BD are the "worst", however that was ascertained. ITUC relies on subjective methods rather than objective data, not much interested in it....South Korea ranked as bad as BD on something always makes me go a bit o_O

Sweat shops are often better than alternatives. Otherwise, why would they take the job in the first place? If people really care about their working condition, buy their products.

Middlemen extract like 95%+ of what you spend in the end to buy. Sweat shop model is only useful for macro building of buffer for govt (and companies) to expand over time into non-sweat shop industries (and help with education, training, capital import etc)....but it relies on the effective (long term) quality of those institutions and elite people.

The actual living quality of those in the sweat shop rarely improves, and argument can be made it worsens in many cases (argument of cooped up factories compared to rural setting etc.)....but the cost of living index pushed by economic development/coalescing in cities compared to the rural areas is like a cruel taskmaster whip in many cases to break even for the social pyramid base.

ITUC perspective on all of this is very limited....it judges from first world lens....without looking at the great sweat and blood that those countries had to go through as well. Without context, there is no real understanding.

As usual we have the usual pointless negative threads opened with negative connotations from the usual quarters directed toward our country. @waz @WAJsal bhai please delete this useless thread of no worth before the mudslinging begins....Thanks in advance.

How is that a "pointless" and "negative" post? It's a reality based post (or you don't like that part?)

If you personally cannot or don't know how to discuss the topic and the issues, you just look desperate wailing to the mods each time.

I'm actually making an argument that the ITUC report being more or less irrelevant for BD and possibly many others in the same category.....was not BD specific at all.

Bangladesh, India, Pakistan with same rating is no surprise. The only surprise is the inclusion of South Korea, it is a developed country after all. The case of Bangladesh has been improving drastically after the Rana plaza incident and due to the ongoing western pressure of ensuring proper working conditions and labor rights.
