Bangladesh adds 470,000 mobile phone subscribers in August

Bangladesh ended August with 162.58 million mobile phone subscribers, up from 162.11 million at end-July, according to data from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Grameenphone led the a market with 75.61 million mobile customers in August, up from 75.43 million in July, followed by Robi Axiata with 47.76 million, up from 47.73 million the previous month. Banglalink had 34.81 million mobile customers, while Teletalk ended August with 4.38 million mobile customers.

The BTRC figures also show that there were 98.13 million internet subscribers in August, up from 96.17 million in July. The fixed-line internet user base rose to 5.735 million in August from 5.734 million in July, and the WiMax subscriber base was flat at 40,000.

Internet subscribers are defined as people who have used the internet at least once in the past 90 days.

Well access to information means dependence on cellphones for most middle class and even lower class folks. That means trade information, commodity pricing, e-govt. services, education and training services, and last but not least media and entertainment and PSTN replacement.

And access means Grameenphone (just ONE provider - which already had cell-tower coverage like this back in 2000, and whose services extended into Indian bordering districts, look at cell tower concentration in India) and Bangladesh today leads cellphone penetration rate as well as in manufacturing to mobile handsets from basic component level in South Asia. India and Pakistan will both become (legally or illegally) significant markets for Bangladesh-manufactured handsets.

In my mind those are all quite important factors.

I don't think its supposed to be totally unique subscriber, but just total subscriptions (so if you own 2+ phones, each gets counted rather than just 1)....and I believe BD uses huge amount of legacy old phones still in operation that most other countries have closed service for.

But BD then uses a really faulty standard for "estimating" its internet user base though (it uses a theoretical max frontier number)....and there is huge discrepancy as result from ITU estimates which uses actual use (rather than potential total access) by more accepted world standards. Makes all the difference between "98 million" (BD claim) compared to "15%" (ITU estimate).

Whatever these insignificant trolls cook up has absolutely no bearing on reality. Already Walton TV's are exported to as technically advanced a market as Germany. Indians will be getting the opportunity to buy Bangladeshi TV's, Refrigerators and Aircons on OEM basis. No amount of Sanghi propaganda will hold these progress back.

While the most important Indian import to Bangladesh is Hajmola candy, not to mention Chawanprash, Brittania and Parachute-branded FMCG garbage. No Indian TV's, Refrigerators or Aircons ever found a market in Bangladesh for over forty years because of the mal-reputation of quality so rightly deserved.

People have several sim cards ( one can take highest 15 sim card with his/her NID ) and everything is considered individual since no sim is disabled!
