Dhaka, Mar 3 (UNB) - Bangladesh has been ranked ninth among its Asian neighbours in an international ranking of most generous countries.

With an overall score of 31 percent, the country has been ranked 74 in the world and fourth in South Asia in the CAF World Giving Index 2018 by British organisation Charities Aid Foundation (CAF).

In the ninth edition of the CAF World Giving Index presents the ranking after collecting data from 146 countries across the globe over a five-year period (2013-2017).

“With as many as 2.4 billion people set to join the world’s middle classes by 2030, it is crucial that we ensure that the groundwork is put in place to support and encourage a mass engagement in giving,” said the report.

The rest of the Asian countries which made their place on top ten are Singapore, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Nepal, Republic of Korea, Thailand and the Philippines, according to the CAF index.

Indonesia took the first position in the world scoring the highest 59 percent, it said.

However, space has been made on top by Myanmar which drops to ninth place in this year’s rankings, having previously held the top spot since 2014. All three of Myanmar’s scores decreased since last year.

“After the Rohingya crisis reached its peak during 2017, it’s hard not to conclude that the country’s troubles have contributed to Myanmar’s people being less willing or less able to give in these ways,” it said.

Australia and New Zealand make up the other countries in this year's top three with only around a half a percentage point between them. They are followed very closely by the USA which has moved up one place since 2016.

While Indonesia is the most generous country in the world, India has dropped 43 places to 124 in the list of 146 nations surveyed for the 9th edition of the World Giving Index released by the UK-based Charities Aid Foundation.

The index, released on Monday, shows that India scores significantly lower than some of its neighbours like Pakistan (91), Sri Lanka (27), Nepal (52) and Bangladesh (74). However, it is placed well above China, which ranks 142 in the Giving Index. So far, India’s best show has been its 2013 ranking of 69.

However, India still has the highest number of people volunteering time to support any cause despite seeing a decline of nearly 13 percentage points since last year in the proportion of people doing so. India also has the highest number of people donating money to charity, while it occupies the second spot in the highest number of people helping a stranger.

The World Giving Index is primarily based upon data from Gallup’s World View World Poll and includes survey from 146 countries that was collected throughout 2017 that together represent around 95 per cent of the world’s population (around 5.2 billion people).

Additionally, almost a third (31%) of people in India reported helping a stranger in 2017, while 20 per cent of them said they donated money to charity and 15 per cent volunteered their time to support any cause or organisation. Libya is the most generous in terms of helping a stranger, where 83% of people reported having done so.

Speaking on the report, Meenakshi Batra, CEO, Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) India said, “Today’s report shows that three in ten people in India still took the time to help a stranger last year, and one in five had donated money in the month before the survey took place. This is testament to the innate desire of people to help others. We are, however, concerned that this figure has fallen – which goes on to show that people’s generosity can never be taken for granted.”

This year the top spot has been vacated by Myanmar, which has dropped down to ninth place, after four years at number one on the Index. Indonesia, which came second in 2017, has catapulted itself to the top spot with a World Giving Index score of 59 per cent. Australia and New Zealand make up the other countries in this year’s top three, with the United States occupying the 4th spot.

Two countries made their debut in the top 20 this year — Singapore and Haiti. While the index shows high levels of generosity in Haiti, Singapore’s performance has been driven by increases in volunteering and helping a stranger. Interestingly, Singapore ranked as low as 64 just five years ago.

Broken down continent wise, the index reveals an upward trend for Africa with a slight decrease for the Americas. This has led to a narrowing of the giving gap between the continents. Six of this year’s top 20 countries in the Giving Index are in Europe and five are in Asia (four of these make it into the top 10). Four of the top 20 are in Africa and three are in the Americas.

Charities Aid Foundation, is the one releasing this survey. According to wiki "CAF provides services to charities, businesses and individuals in the UK and abroad, including help with fund raising,[4] consultancy,[5] and loans and grants". This survey feels like a marketing tool to their future customers.

I hope bangladeshis know about organization they are donating to. Wherever there is money involved, organizations will have vested interests. There has been a rise in charities and NGOs in bangladesh that claims to be helping out their cause but instead diverts a lot of the resources/money donated for their own consumption.

I am all for helping others and i am glad that many people in bangladesh are generous. But i prefer to help out someone or volunteer, either their time or skill, instead of donating money to these organization. I am all for donating money to the people directly though.

Financial transactions are not logged in a system in Pakistan. However the government is trying to implement changes to the system to ensure financial transparency.

Not entirely the case of Saylani Cheepa and other private NGOs they have their proper systems implemented which is available for audit.
