Bangladesh has retained its position in the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2016 as it is the third most peaceful country in South Asia.

Although the position remained same the last year, the index puts Bangladesh on the 83rd spot globally, up on the 84th in last year’s GPI.

“Internal security concerns were heightened in Bangladesh owing to anti-government protests that have led to an increased number of detainees, said the report published recently.

Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) produces the GPI as the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness.

In the South Asia, Bhutan ranked the top position followed by Nepal. The peace situation in Bangladesh is much better than Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“South Asia’s position remained unchanged at eighth out of the nine regions. Overall, the individual overall scores of Afghanistan, Nepal and India deteriorated, while for Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, scores improved modestly,” the report said.

The tenth edition of the GPI finds that Iceland is once again the world’s most peaceful country, followed by Denmark, Austria, New Zealand and Portugal, which improved nine places.

The five countries at the bottom of the index are all suffering from ongoing conflicts, with Syria ranking least peaceful, followed by South Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia, it said.

Europe retains its position as the most peaceful region in the world, accounting for six of the first seven places in the global rankings, the report finds adding that the average score for Europe deteriorated slightly, reflecting increases in the impact of terrorism due to the large terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels as well as the escalation of violence and instability in Turkey and its deteriorating relations with its neighbours.

The report observed that the tenth edition of the GPI finds that overall global levels of peace continue to deteriorate while the gap between the most and least peaceful countries continues to widen.

“The rising global inequality in peace is important to highlight as it masks some positive trends. While some of the most peaceful nations have reached historic levels of peace, the least peaceful nations have become even less peaceful. So intense is the violence and conflict in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that, when looking at the rest of the world, the average levels of peacefulness in fact increased.”

I'd differentiate Bangladesh as the third most _industrialized_ peaceful country.

Events of dis-harmony happen though, but they are few and far between and do not represent endemic problems originating internally.

All the best to Bangladesh, be the south Korea of south asia. May be one day people from all over will flock to Bangladesh for a peaceful and prosperous life.

This index is a bit shabby . How is BD safer than Srilanka which hasn't had an attack in 7 years compared to BD which has had an increase in killings and attacks since last year ? They ranked Russia in last 15 . Seriously? So the biggest sporting event in the world Fifa world cup is happening in one the least safest countries in the world ?

Pakistan did improve its ranking but there are some things that goes against us in the index . The index gives low ranking to countries having nuclear weapons and the countries which has refugees(which we happen to have alot )

I have such confusion about the statistics. Honestly. In whole world Bhutan is a peaceful country . 2nd 3r, 4th all goes to some small states of EU. Everyday , when i open news paper , i see some one killed by some one . Same as Pakistan or India. In which content they made the statistics i am lill bit worry abt that .

The index ranking seems quite alright to me, since less peaceful can also mean a high violent crime rate. Sri lanka, for example, has a higher homocide and kidnapping rate than bangladesh and the attacks that happened in bangladesh this year were the first of its kind. Furthermore, small scale clashes along ethnic lines still takes place in sri lanka. The war may be over in sri lanka, however the wounds from decades of fighting are still there, it will take time to heal and reconcile.
