Bangladesh is the second largest supplier of online labour, says a recent report, analysing data from e-platforms connecting freelancers with employers.

India is the traditional labour outsourcing destination for online labour accounting for 24 per cent of the total labour, according to Online Labour Index worker supplement study by the Oxford Internet Institute.

India is followed by Bangladesh (16 per cent) and US (12 per cent), according to report by http://www.businessworld.in, http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com

India, Bangladesh are followed by US, Pakistan, Philippines and the UK in what is being termed "digital gig work" or freelance work offered online.

Oxford Internet Institute of the University of Oxford published the report last week.

It hosts the "iLabour project" as part of which the Online Labour Index is produced. This report analysed data for the first week of July.

Different countries' workers focus on different occupations.

The software development and technology category is dominated by workers from the Indian subcontinent, who command a 55 per cent market share.

The professional services category, which consists of services such as accounting, legal services, and business consulting, is led by UK-based workers with a 22 per cent market share," says the report.

While software and technology services was the top sector for India, creative and multimedia services came second, and sales and marketing support was the third most popular online labour sector for the country.

The report analyses data from four online platforms -- Fiverr, Freelancer, Guru, and PeoplePerHour.

"Based on traffic statistics, we can estimate that these four sites represent at least 40 per cent of the global market for platform-based online work.

The figures are thus likely to give a reasonably good indication of the overall contours of the market, and especially of what skills different countries bring to the global market," says senior OII research fellow Vili Lehdonvirta in an online post that published these figures.

Lehdonvirta, along with researcher Otto Kassi developed the Online Labour Index.

That's great news. Many people earn their living by just working at home through such online platforms. Not to mention, once you get some experience, you do quite well to even run your families.
What kind of work is done online etc? Could you enlighten me more on this subject?

Sure. If you go sites like Upwork (previously oDesk), there are many outsourced work that private individuals and companies post which are to be done by people having skills in it. So you find work from data entry to article writing to programming to teaching/learning languages and many more. However, you need to have the requisite skills needed to work in your field of interest. You apply for these work and usually start off slow as you dont yet have a 'reputation'. This 'reputation' hails from your history of work and how well you have done them before. Hence the more you work, the more better-looking your portfolio is and higher chances that you will be trusted with more work by posters in the future. In this way, many people tend to get their work done at a lower cost compared to involving commercial institutions.

I have seen people in Bangladesh earn around 70k+ taka per month through these online gigs. Good way to earn money if you have the fitting skill set. However, its a volatile career and your income wont stay the same over the months.

Alhamdulillah Made around 15 Lac+ but could make more If I could concentrate on developing skill and put time. But day job kills more time.

Aside from freelancing, you can develop your own online business. Like developing blog and making money through adsense, affiliate marketing. PDF makes money through Adsense. :cheesy:
