Bangla New Year celebrated in Islamabad

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Bangladesh High Commission (HC) in Islamabad on Sunday celebrated the Bangla New Year – 1417 with a sense of jubilation, traditional enjoyment and gaiety.

A number of diplomats, Pakistan government officials, elite of the town, journalists, children, expatriate Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi students studying in different educational institutions in Pakistan attended the colourful programme chalked out for the occasion.

The HC organised an event from morning to afternoon for familiarising the expatriate Bangladeshis and Pakistani people and children with the Bangladeshi culture and traditions. The Bangla New Year is usually celebrated on April14 in Bangladesh. Known as “Boishakh” the first Bengali month, marks the first day of the crop season. Usually on this day, everybody thoroughly cleans and decorates his house. The people have a traditional bath early in the morning and come out dressed in fine makeup and the best of apparel.

The young and old spend most of the day visiting relatives, friends, and neighbours. Several also throng local fairs arranged in many parts of the country, where various agricultural products, traditional handicrafts, toys, cosmetics and various kinds of food and sweets are sold.

The event in Islamabad was marked with a colourful cultural programme, which included patriotic and folk songs, dances, children fashion show, recitation from famous poetry works of renowned Bengali poets and other family entertainment programmes.

The children and teachers of several schools organised funfairs on this occasion. Toys and fancy jewellery exhibitions were a main attraction for those attending the festivity.

Refreshing snacks were also distributed among the guests. Bangladeshi women also took part in pickle-making competitions. Bangladeshi dishes were also served to the guests as an added traditional cuisine.

Later, Bangladesh Acting High Commissioner Mahfuzur Rahman awarded prizes to the winners of the competitions held among schoolchildren, ladies and gents. Rahman said the Pakistanis and the expatriate Bangladeshis made the event a success.

Mohammad Ishtiaque Hossain, Press Counsellor at the Bangladesh HC in Islamabad also applauded the successful event. Dressed in an informal seasonal dress and with a wide smile Hossain was serving the guests with the things they required. His affable personality was pleasing and charming indeed.

The gala ended with the High Commissioner thanking one and all for their cooperation and wished everyone a very happy Bangla NewYear

Happy Beshok.h to our Bongla friends.

Hope I said the name right!
Would you explain to a cultural ignorant, is this festival another spring festival, like nauroz for example? I know most new years begin with the advent of spring and the rejuvination of the flora and fauna. But in the Bengal they never die if I'm not mistaken.

Subho Noboborsho!!We celebrated Bengali New Year here in my office with my colleagues as well.I m a Bengali myself ,but before that I m an Indian, and proud to be so.It was a wonderful ceremony. We have a small team of people working together who r from different regions of India-gujrat,andhra,maharastra,madhya pradesh,jharkhand,west-bengal and a girl from Assam:-)smitten:).We had a pretty good time!!:cheers:

Ill try to help u.The day is called " Poila Baishakh",means the first day of the month of Baishakh. It is the first day of Bengali calender.
We exchange greetings with each other by saying "Subho Noboborsho",which in Bengali means-"Happy New Year".In Bangladesh, this day is celebrated as a National holiday. In India,in the states of West Bengal and Assam, this day is a state holiday.
So,"Subho Noboborsho" to u:smitten::yahoo::cheers:

No its not spring festival but the first day of Bengali Calendar. Incidentally its the end of Spring in Bengal and the first day of summer.
You are right on the last sentence. We do have six seasons but they bear very little differences.

Bold part is unnecessary. You would had been more proud in celebrating Bengali new year being a citizen of Bangladesh. Does India have a new year? :)

Suvo Nobo Borsho to you too... :smitten:

Why BD has different new year than others? :undecided:

Anyways Suvo Nobo Borsho to everyone! :D

Does India have a new year? :) :

Assamese new year - Bohaq Bihu

marwari new year - Diwali
Punjabi new year - Baisakhi

I agree :agree:...but I was just curious if there was any specific reason for saying that, nothing offensive.

I quite understand that the bold part was not that much required here.
But u need to understand that i did it on purpose.India is a land of cultural diversity. Here we have Bengali new year ,Tamil new year,Marathi new year and many more occasions and festivals which are regional specialties. We do celebrate these occasions together,an example of which i gave in my previous posts.
What i meant is in spite of the cultural differences ,we all r united together for the sake of the nation.
I didnt do it hurt the sentiments of any other person, hence should not be taken in that way.

Regarding the second part,I dont really understand why should i be proud being citizen of any particular country while celebrating an occasion of a particular community.
Infact I think it is wrong and insulting to divide the community, culture and language in terms of political borders.I can even be a US citizen and still celebrate a Bengali occasion just because Im a Bengali and im proud to be so. Indian is my nationality, and Bengali is my mother tongue,my culture and the community to which i primarily belong, and I am proud of all of them.
I hope u understand me.
Subho Noborsho to u brother from the core of my heart:smitten:

Ohh well, hard to explain. The whole world including Obama/Hilary wishes Bengali new year to Bengalis only because we made it the day.

Ok good... but they are hardly known and nobody follow the calendar either. No calendar (widely used) no new year.

whatt !! so you mean If a Bengali is a citizen of some other country he can not feel proud of this day?? and are you saying the Bengalis in Bangladesh are not only bengalis and all other should not celebrate it ??
Dude even a sikh in Pakistan can celebrate gurpurab and I am sure Pakistanis will wish them on that occassion in their own land..does that mean they are not Pakistani?? or they should be an Indian citizen to feel proud of the occassion ??
and if its hard to explain..I am ready to listen..I am a patient man.

They are very much followed by the people who are supposed to follow it..the Indians.

No calendar no new year ?? what calendar do you want ?? even you follow the same calendar that the world follows.
if you want calendar for specific cultures of India that I have mentioned..then surprisngly even that is present..if you dont know, thats your problem.
