This is wrong interpretation.Baybars and qutuz only defeated hulagu's rearguard which he had left behind around 2 Tumans only.Hulagu's full army comprised 10-15 tumans. The mamluks knew they never stood a chance if hulegu returned in force with his full might despite their bravery. The credit of the fact that he never did goes to Berke khan, the brother of Batu -khan of the golden horde. After Batu's death while hulegu was campaigning,Berke ascended the golden horde.Berke had become a muslim convert and was horrified by hulegu's devastation in the muslim heartland. He also had territorial dispute with hulegu.

"He has sacked all the cities of the muslims, and has brought about the death of the Caliph. With the help of God I will call him to account for so much innocent blood." -Berke

When hulegu amassed his forces to return to egypt and crush the mameluks once and for all ,Berke attacked Hulegu preventing him from moving his forces. This was the first time Mongol fought Mongol on a large scale -a sign of the future disintegration. He made an alliance with baibars.Hulegu was checkmated by this 2 -front strategy and couldn't shift to the offensive.Baibars was always very keen to keep the alliance strong and sent numerous gifts, ambassadors and muslim ulema to the golden horde.Without Berke the mameluks and arbia.egypt would have been overrun and ain-jalut would have been a footnote in history.

Thanks for that, I was literally going to add that to a follow up post. You are completely right, with the Golden horde's conversion, the Mongol might through Hulegu was at an end, sealed with his defeat in the Caucasus. However the battle marked the first time fast moving cavalry managed to defeat the Mongols in open battle. Ironically they fell to their own tactics of feigned retreat.

There was an Egyptian tv serial about him in 1992-93 that i watched in my childhood, it was then when i learnt about Mongols.

This is true Berke Khan, converted to Islam, prevented Helugu from taking revenge from Mamluks by engaging him in war
