What's new

Bahawalpur Solar Park will be world's largest

''It is expected to generate 1.271 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh) of electricity annually, greatly easing power shortages in Punjab and neighbouring areas.''

So 1.27 billon units per year? actually not that much........

solar power is twice expensive than the most expensive hydro projects build upon loans.
its 4 times expensive than a typical hydro project
has less life span of 20 years
it is also nearly twice as expensive as imported coal

however Pakistan is probably only country which uses diesel and its half as expensive when compared to that.

going solar is not the direction unless all panels are massively produced in Pakistan, even still it will always be expensive than hydro and coal.

our focus should be hydro and coal.
so far govt has shown intent but has failed especially in executing the already funded/financially closed Dasu project (due to issues in land procurement) and to find financial closure for bhasha dam.

it has been successful in carrying on fully WB funded tarbela extension and financially closed NJ project from previous govt.

PRIVATE POWER & INFRASTRUCTURE BOARD projects like karot, suki and some other projects were successfully financially closed by current govt thanks to Chinese banks lending

if the govt starts work on atleast one new major dam like bhasha than i think it will be called a success.
even though we have feasibilities of half a dozen projects in hand

Chinese Banks are lending generously for solar projects because of the solar glut. But this wouldn't last long because people are now resisting coal fired plants in the Middle Kingdom and the the government has increased the solar target to rescue the solar industry.

they are lending more for hydro and coal projects. solar project is a very small part of what they are ready to lend.
solar power is viable option for china, as they prices of solar panels is cheapest there and their share of dirty coal is already too much

Dams under construction which should be completed between 2017-22.

Suki Kinari: 3.01 billion units
Neelum Jhelum: 5.15b
Karot dam: 3.43b
Kohala dam: 4.8b
Dasu-I: 10.5b
Tarbela IV: 3.8b
Tarbela V: 3.6b

Total 34-35 billion units/year, I probably missed few small dams. Right now Pak generate around 32 billion units from hydro.

.
Dont ask to have support they will give you a value you cant imagine yet have to buy....

Once completed there are suddenly over their budget (THANKS TO all the mithai they kept eating/ pocketing along the way) -by soo much that either the plant gets shut down or renders to expensive to run OR the price soars rocketing....

I came across plenty chinese PV panels.. most of them are sub standard products.. lifetime will be 5-10 years max. which gives hard time to investors. ..

brother, pakistan production is 100 billion units and demand nearly 150 billion units or more..thats right now. imagine the condition in 2020.

now having said that the problem is that above projects will mostly be completed after 2020 if processed on time which is not the case even in projects with financing already achieved by previous govt like dasu project. its complete
incompetence on part of WAPDA/govt regarding dasu.

similar according to all reports tarbela is behind schedule even after 54 million of additional funding, though its fault of contractor and wapda is exempted here

any project has two phases

1. financial closure i.e arranging funding(the difficult part)
to understand the part 1 look at NJ, its financial closure was never achieved until very recently and work was mostly done on promises and adhoc measures(a special tax on power was levied) result was a disaster in terms of constructions, cost and delays
2. actual ground work

remember the success of govt is not seen by completion of easy projects but completion of projects that are considered tough and difficult. any govt would have achieved the above projects,in fact dasu, tarbela and NJ are the projects that the past govt financial closed.
however the more pressing issue is water storage, when we talk about dams we are thinking of water storage not power alone. how is the govt going tackle that issue? non of the above projects store water!!!

now just look at basha dam its just a single dam and its production of power is at 24-28 billions(20-24 +4-6 billion units
down stream effect on tarbela, gahzi brotha and chasma) units nearly equal to combine effect of all the above projects. plus we are not even counting the effect on flood control water storage and protecting tarbela

so in reality bhasha dam benefit alone is much more than combine efect of all these projects

true, most panels are substandard, but there are lot of Chinese panels that are excellent. only the cheaper ones are substandard

Actually am testing the panels from past few years.. am not talking about cheap panels.. but expensive panels it's self..

well i have been using both german and chinese pnnels, german cost around 1.3$(130rs) per watt while chinese good one cost 90 cents(90rs) per watt both have nearly same capability. cheaper ones that are nearly 2/3 to 1/2 of this price are not good

Bhasha is most important project going forward. But all the dams I listed are already undercnstruction or work will start this year.

Bhasha dam seem like 2030 project to me, along with Dasu-II and Bunji. These three gigantic projects may as well take 2 decades, so 2035 possibly. But I hope Basha is completed before 2030 and Bunji by 2035.

.
We need better solar power tech...current tech is damn expensive in terms of land required to put up the plan, initial capital investment and regular maintenance..We, in Indian Sub cont countries, are blessed with ample sun light throughout the year but its unfortunate most place are still deprived of energy at affordable cost..

well by 2020 we will have water shortage so extreme that we will forget about gas and electric shortages.
and
it will all be due to fact that government couldn't set aside 50 billion a year less than 10% of developmental project.
all of the above projects doesnt cost govt a dime its due to bureaucratic lobbying !
i thinks this sums up why i consider PML N performance so far is pretty ordinary ..atleast they should own up to 1/3 of what they promised in there manifesto still available online!
making dams is difficult because it takes time which means that its not suitable for politics

the only reason why water shortage was deferred is due to a 3 MAF mangla uprising project by gen musharraf thats half of the size of bhasha

we are talking about power, if you look at there 2013 manifesto it states that by decreasing line losses we can tackle load shedding in three years.
now the reason for this statement is clear, power losses is the mother of all problems.

so what happened in 2 years, we should atleast expect some improvements right?. what we see is astonishing, line losses are just gone up!

had PML N followed 1/3 of what it stated in in its 16 point strategy everything would have been going in right direction and i would have said bravo.

in short PML N performance at reforms level has been terrible, but it has started some projects worth parsing, primarly due to massive Chinese investment. one wonders whether is it due to change in govt in Pakistan or china new leadership that is responsible for this.?

but no reforms in power, taxation, education or health sector

Solar power and other means of clean energy is the way forward. It's good for the environment and also creates new jobs. South Asian countries get plenty of sun, they should take full advantage of that.

BAHAWALPUR: Pakistan’s first-ever solar generation project was formally inaugurated at the Quaid-i-Azam Solar Park (QASP) on Tuesday by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

The QASP has been designed to generate a total of 1,000MW of electricity. The QASP’s first unit reportedly went into test run last month and had achieved successful results. The generated electricity was being supplied to the National Grid System.

PM Nawaz was warmly welcomed upon his arrival as dancers presented a beautiful traditional dance of the area while two renowned folk singers of the area also entertained the gathering with their melodious voices.

The premier also inaugurated a commemorative stamp issued by the Pakistan Post.

Pakistan will overcome power shortage by 2017-2018: PM

On the occasion, PM Nawaz said several mega projects in the power sector have been launched which will help overcome the power shortage in Pakistan by 2017-2018, said a report published on Radio Pakistan.

Terming the 46 billion dollars of Chinese investment in Pakistan as unprecedented, PM Nawaz said that all projects with the Chinese cooperation will be completed on time. He said Pakistan and China will establish a special committee in order to ensure these projects are completed on record time.

Speaking about Karachi, PM Nawaz said that the situation in city has improved and extortion and kidnapping for ransom have been significantly reduced. He added that Karachi will once again be the city of lights.

QASP will be the biggest solar power project in the world: Shahbaz

Speaking at the ceremony, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that once completed, the QASP will be the biggest solar power project in the world.

He also revealed that China provided a Rs2 billion concession on the project. He further added that that the project will begin generating another 350MW of electricity by the end of this year.

In the first phase, at least 0.5 million solar panels have been installed in three blocks over 500 acres of the solar park land.

Earlier, the infrastructure for the park, including a boundary wall, buildings and roads were constructed while water was taken to the site from a nearby canal. The construction work of the first phase of 100MW had been taken in hand last year.

The second and third units of the solar park comprise 300MW and 600MW, respectively. The work on these two units had been jointly inaugurated last month in Islamabad by the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The second phase is expected to be completed in the beginning of next year followed by work on the third phase.

You have to understand the difference between provincial government and federal government. Nawaz is prime minister of Pakistan and it's his job to pay attention to the whole country not just Punjab.

Please, for the love of God understand Nawaz is prime minister of Pakistan not just Punjab. If his brother is developing Punjab with federal governments help. NO matter how you spin it , it dosent look good.
All the projects
Lahore metro
Pindi metro
Multan metro
Faisalabad metro
QA Solar park
Orange line train
Danish school
Green transport scheme
Etc etc all these projects have been initiated by punjab through provincial budget.

Federal gov. Didnt financed or provided funds for such projects.

Other provinces should do some thing except lolly pop for their people
