Bahais unveil renovated shrine in Israel

MATTI FRIEDMAN,Associated Press

HAIFA, Israel (AP) — Followers of the Bahai faith unveiled their newly renovated holy site on the coast of Israel on Tuesday, drawing attention to one of the Holy Land's lesser-known religions.

The renovation of the Shrine of the Bab, a U.N.-designated World Heritage site, lasted two-and-a-half-years and cost $6 million dollars, according to the Bahai leadership.

The structure has been refitted and strengthened to withstand an earthquake, and the building's dome — the most distinctive feature of the landscape in the Mediterranean port city of Haifa — has been covered with 11,790 new gold-glazed porcelain tiles.

The Bahai religion has roots in 19th century Iran. The man known to believers as the Bab, or "gate," and venerated as a prophet was executed for heresy in 1850 and later buried in Haifa. Today, the faith claims between 5 and 6 million adherents worldwide.

In Haifa, the domed Bahai shrine is positioned on a densely populated hillside, at the midpoint of a striking green strip of manicured gardens that cuts up the slope from top to bottom.

A Bahai engineer from California, Saeid Samadi, oversaw the project. Samadi was born in Iran, where Bahais have long suffered persecution for their beliefs and where the Bahai faith was declared illegal after the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Samadi said much of the renovation work was carried out free of charge by Bahai volunteers. "The spirit of it was more important than the actual work," he said.

While the three world religions that have historically vied for control of the Holy Land — Islam, Christianity and Judaism — venerate Jerusalem, the Bahais are alone in centering their faith in Haifa, which is known more for its factories and busy port than for religious sentiment. Around 750,000 people visited the Haifa shrine last year, the Bahais say.

They maintain a second site, the faith's holiest, a short drive to the north in the Israeli coastal city of Acre. The Acre site marks the tomb of the religion's founder, Baha'u'llah, who was imprisoned in the city by the Ottoman Turks and died there in 1892.

They are indeed fortunate that the Israeli govt diligently protects the places of worship of all sects , even the Al -Aqsa is under the sole charge of an autonomous muslim wakf board .

Good to hear about the renovation of the 'Shrine of the Bab'. During my visits to Hefa, I've been there. And its in a very striking setting, on the hill slopes and visible from a great distance.

More than 50,000 man-hours were spent on the stonework by the staff of the restoration office and volunteers - including many young people - from Australia, Canada, China, Ecuador, Germany, India, Kenya, Mongolia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Vanuatu, all trained by expert conservators. Every square centimetre of the building's exterior was checked and restored.

Congratulations to the Bahai!

And Iranians.
Bahaism will come back to Iran, where it was invented, in full force after the regime is gone. Bahaism, Chrisitianity and Zoroastrianism are proving to be real dangers to Islam in Iran. If Iranians were allowed to change religion today, millions would leave Islam, me and my family included.

In another topic, I was told by other muslim members that apostasy from islam is allowed without any problems, though I highly doubt that.

Why don't let me whether you can freely choose to leave islam for another religion or become an atheist?

Thanks.

That looks really nice.

I met two american senior people when I was students in U.S. They are bahais and we used to have pot-luck every week in their home. They are very nice people and there were no agenda in their nice gesture and help.

In Islam apostasy is punishable by death. And anyways, that's another topic for another day. The fact is that in Iran it is a crime to change your religion and nobody is even allowed to change religion according to law, except from other religions to Islam. Islam is officially the state religion and Islamic law is state law.

Those hypocrites indeed have lied in the forum and kept lecturing me how tolerant islam religion is. They even gave me an example of one former muslim guy leaving islam without any problems to show the tolerance.

They even lectured me that women have way more rights than men in muslim world.

One thing for sure, I have no hatred towards islam religion and I have never read Quran. However, I give two interpretations:
(1) either the islam followers have wrong interpretations of Quran to cause such intolerance in today's muslim world
(2) or the nature of islam is just the way it is.

I said I would rather believe (1) is the correct answer though I do not know for sure.

No other major religions nowadays have such intolerance towards apostasy. Maybe only medieval catholics had such practice???

If a religion is confidence enough, why would it be afraid when the followers will come and whether they will go???

Well Abrahamic religions are used for control. It's EXTREMELY importatnt to distinguisg between East Asian religions and West Asian religions. West Asia is home to the world's first civilizations. Over the last 11000 years, religion has proven to be an effective weapon. We Persians used Zoroastrianism to conquer the world. Arabs used Islam to unite their people and attack Persia and then the rest of the planet. etc...

The whole point of Islam and Christianity is control so that's why. In the West however, religion can no longer be used as a form of control because of mass education. Christianity has lost its whole point. With time, Islam will lose its appeal in the ME just like how Christianity lost its appeal in Europe.

I met an Bahai girl from Iran at my school . She was describing the prosecution of Bahaiis in Iran and loosing some family member to it. Now she has received asylum in US.
