Back-door talks with Pak: India says no

HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, February 27, 2012

While India is open to engagement between All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and Islamabad, it is not inclined to any back-channel diplomacy with the neighbour at the moment due to serious internal divisions within Pakistan. “There is no question of any back-channel diplomacy at this stage as the Asif Ali Zardari government is at odds with the all-powerful Pakistan Army, and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is battling the Supreme Court... Even if we want to talk, who do we talk to?” said a top government official on condition of anonymity.

However, he said that New Delhi was not averse to Pakistan re-engaging the Hurriyat Conference as the separatists always get their cues from Islamabad and the Pakistan ISI.

South Block sources said that the India-Pakistan process, in fact, had slowed down as Islamabad is yet to confirm dates for home secretary-level talks and 26/11 judicial commission team is yet to make up its mind to travel to Mumbai.

Besides, India has taken a dim view of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) patron Hafiz Saeed, key accused in the 26/11 massacre, sharing political platform with former Pakistani foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the twists and turns Islamabad has taken in granting the most favoured nation status to India.

You guys still haven't been able to prove your accusation that the Pakistani government was behind the Mumbai attacks. :disagree:

:blah: No evidence of us supporting terror. End of talk. And be thankful Pakistan actually listens to you guys even though you've done so much damage to Pakistan.

LoL, if you are looking for the "Ming dynasty owned the world" type of evidence, then certainly India has failed to bring forth the evidence of Pakistani government culpability in the terrorism in India. However, otherwise there is well documented set of proofs including the origin of the 26/11 terrorists, their handlers in LeT, the association of I As I (to borrow NFP from today) with LeT and of course then the Pakistani Army.

So how far is the case on the "Ming owns everything" evidence? :)

Back Channel or unofficial talks are more to fish for solutions and testing waters to see each other's accomodation level + thresholds on either side. These talks are conducted more to look for boundaries and acceptabilities. However, the most important thing to assess before to get in to these unofficial talks is whether the party is worth talking to and if they really have the conviction of getting the accepted, executed.

Talking to Zaradari government today for an issue with Pakistan could be as good or as worse as talking to them about Timbuktu. The real governance is the Army which is anyway showing its teeth again with the Duffa - e - Pakistan rallies with the leaders of the umm-aaah coming together on the same platform well coordinated by the old Hamid (US Visa-Gul).

So there is little use for India to talk to a party which can do ziltch about the actual situation on the ground. Utter waste of time I say.
