Anna Hazare refuses to back Ramdev's call to arms - The Economic Times

AHMEDNAGAR: Social crusader Anna Hazare on Thursday slammed fellow anti-graft campaigner Baba Ramdev's call to arms, saying he abhorred violence and would not associate himself with a man who planned to raise a militia of volunteers. Hazare said he would not meet the yoga guru for some time as it could be construed as support for the plan to train volunteers.

Hazare's statement came even as Ramdev declared his assets and also defended his controversial statement, saying, "I am not training Naxals or Maoists but people who will fight for this country" at a press conference in Haridwar.

However, Hazare pointedly told reporters at Ralegan Siddhi , " Baba Ramdev and I are fighting against corruption but I am for a non-violent movement."

"We will never succeed through a violent agitation. Our freedom struggle was based on non-violence and the second freedom struggle against corruption will be on the same lines of non-violence," he added.

Asked whether he would be meeting Baba Ramdev soon, Hazare said: "If I meet him in the near future, it would be construed as my support to the call to arms."

He reiterated his demand of bringing the Jan Lokpal bill into effect by August 15 this year. "I have realised that fasting is not the only weapon to make the government toe the line. If the Union government does not promulgate the law before August 15, we will start a 'jail bharo' agitation across the country. People of this country are agitated about corruption and they need a clean government."

"We gained independence but the white rulers seems to have been replaced by brown ones. Issues like exploitation, poverty, injustice are not redressed. The second freedom struggle would be for ensuring clean and pro-people administration," he said.

Emphasizing his demand for clean and transparent government, Hazare asserted that all politicians, bureaucrats and public personalities should disclose sources of income. "By doing so, government will give a positive message to the people of this country. Nobody should oppose it and if someone is against it, it means there is something suspicious about that person's sources of income or profession," he said.

When asked about criticism about his agitation from some quarters, Hazare said, "My team's agitation is termed as a drama. Yes, it is a drama but we are doing it seriously. If some people do not like it, they should close their eyes. I cannot help it."

Much before the national media went into a frenzy trying to dig information on Baba Ramdev’s wealth, TEHELKA HINDI published a cover story on his business empire and his corrupt ways of purchasing and misusing land. (Yog se Udyog 5 April 2011 by Manoj Rawat and Mahipal Kunwar). Here are some highlights from the article:

Politics and money: In response to a question from Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh, Ramdev divulged the turnover of his two trusts, Divya Yog Mandir and Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust as Rs 1,100 crore. He also added that he doesn’t own even a single rupee worth of property in his name.

Patanjali Ayurved Limited, which was set up in 2006, donated Rs 10 lakh to the BJP during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Ramdev’s aide, Acharya Balkrishna accepted that the company had also donated to the Congress.

Land scam: The law enforced by the Congress government of Uttarakhand in 2004 restricts the purchase of land by non-residents of Uttarakhand to 500 sq m. For purchases beyond that, government permission was made mandatory. But by then Ramdev had amassed 800 bighas. Thereafter, the law was diluted with the addition of a clause, according to which, if the government doesn’t respond within three months, a person can purchase any amount of land by filing an affidavit on a Rs 100 stamp paper. In 2007, after the BJP government had come to power, the law was made stricter and the 500 sq m limit was scaled down to 250 sq m. But even this did not deter Ramdev, his trusts and companies from purchasing 1,700 bigha in lieu of two orders issued by the government in July 2008. His proposal was cleared for the purpose of conducting research and manufacturing medicines. But Ramdev instead sought permissions to use 800 bighas of the abovementioned land to set up a technology park in Mustafabad. Similarly, Ramdev bought 600 bigha land in Aurangabad, just 20 km off Haridwar on which he built a Yogagram. Villagers claim that this Yogagram has encroached upon 200 bighas of land owned by gram sabhas. The village Thakur Ajab Singh Chauhan says that much of the encroached land includes that owned by farmers and allotted to Harijans. Access to the jungle has also been cut off as the pathway leading to it runs through the encroached land. The Tehelka team verified this through Revenue records of Uttarakhand.
Acharya Balkrishna: His nationality is being questioned but while applying for a passport, he claimed he is an Indian citizen and that his birthplace is Haridwar. On 19 April 1998, the Bareilly passport office issued him a passport (AS 245797). According to the documents accessed by Tehelka, on 5 April 2005 the Local Intelligence Unit, Haridwar, held Balkrishna responsible for attaining the passport and an arms license for a pistol and a rifle (License no. 125/4 and 127/4) by presenting incorrect information. On being asked for his opinion, the senior prosecution officer, Bhopal Dutt Joshi sent a letter to LIU finding Balkrishna guilty of violating Section 468, 471 of IPC and Section 12 - A of the Indian Passport Act.

According to a source, in 2006, Balkrishna suggested a draft Act to the higher education department for setting up a private university. The draft had several flaws but instead of addressing them, he contacted the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, ND Tiwari directly and got it cleared.

Minimum wage dispute: In May 2005, his brother and the manager of Divya Pharmacy fired 90 labourers who were demanding minimum wages. Later, others also joined in. After 16 days of strike, a tripartite agreement was reached between the Labour Commissioner (Haridwar), Divya Yog Mandir Trust (Kankhal) and the labourers after which the Trust agreed to pay minimum wages. But the very next day, they weren’t allowed to enter the factory premises, and 114 labourers were fired. The matter is still pending with the Labour Commission.

Illegal land reclamation: On a tip-off from the villagers, the Tehelka team on its visit to Yogagram, found that the Ratmau River was being filled to reclaim land. On a stretch of around half a kilometre in length, the river was being filled for approximately 20 metres in width. The village Thakur, Ajab Singh Chauhan claims that Ramdev diverted the river to his farms during the last monsoon which rendered 500 bigha land infertile.

Ramdev's refusal to name a "corrupt minister": Ramdev caused an uproar in November last year when he said that a minister in Uttarakhand had asked him for a Rs 2 crore bribe to get some work done. He even dragged the Chief Minister, Bhuvan Chandra Khanduri saying that when he complained to him, the CM simply said that the minister should have asked for the money as funds for the party. In response, the CM immediately called a press conference announcing that Ramdev had never complained against the minister and even challenged Ramdev to name the minister. He also warned that he would file a case of defamation against Ramdev. But Ramdev remained silent and did not disclose the minister's name. Uttarakhand Kranti Dal's chairman, Trivendra Singh Pawar claims that Ramdev - who started the drive against corruption- lost the fight on moral grounds when Ramdev instead of naming the minister who demanded a Rs 2 crore bribe, chose to remain silent.

Ramdev was supposdely linked by Rashritya RSS by many politicians.Lalu Yadav said in a press conference that "Sadhvi Ritambhara was the first one to share the stage (with Ramdev at ramlila protest). She was the one who was responsible for the Babri Masjid demolition".[49] Digvijay Singh,Congress general secretary alleged that all the 5 star arrangements at Ramlila ground protests were done by right activist group RSS and VHP.[50] Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that "Some people with vested interest are hijacking and remote controlling the protest by RSS and BJP".He also alleged that nation wide protest by ramdev is being financed by RSS.

Initially RSS leader Ram Madhav made distance on this issue.[51] Though later RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said that "The RSS was not behind the stir launched by Ramdev seeking repatriation of the black money stashed illegally in foreign banks but have extended all support to it (agitation).He added "RSS cannot remain a mute spectator to the social revolution taking place against corruption and black money. Therefore, it has asked its cadres to join the agitation"[52]

In March 2005, 113 employees of Divya Yoga Mandir Trust, Haridwar started an agitation for minimum wages and employees's rights such as coverage under the Provident Fund and Employees' State Insurance schemes. After a tripartite meeting, an agreement was reached between the workers, management and the district administration. However, some agitating workers were dismissed by the Trustees after being alleged to be responsible for sabotage. Their case was taken up by the trade union Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). They are still to be reinstated.[53][54]

Brinda Karat, a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was involved with the protesters and was told by disgruntled workers that animal parts were used in the manufacture of some medicines. In January 2006, she accused the Divya Pharmacy, owned by Divya Yog Mandir Trust for using human and animal bones in their medicines. Samples of the medicines Kulya Bhasm (Mixture) and Yauvanamrit Vati purchased from Brahmakalp Chikitsalaya- the Trust's Hospital at Haridwar were allegedly tested at government labs and the presence of animal materials in the sample was confirmed.[53] However, the source of the samples was disputed, as these had been supplied by Karat to the labs and not procured by government officials. Karat produced what were claimed to be the prescription and cash receipt obtained from the medicine counter for the samples povided.[53][54][55]

Her controversial remarks drew strong condemnation from several politicians in North India, like Sharad Pawar, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Narayan Dutt Tiwari.[56][citation needed] Subsequently she received a legal notice on the behalf of a B.J.P. leader in Faridabad.[57]

A few month later in 2006, four samples were sent to the government recognized Shriram Institute of Industrial Research in Delhi. The report from this institute declared that the samples did not contain any objectionable ingredient and were purely herbal.[citation needed] However, the Union Health Ministry did find animal DNA in the samples, though most newspapers carried reports to the contrary.[58]

Second coming of Hindutva?

Buoyed by the new cult status, Baba now calls for an 11,000-strong armed

This circus back home with Baba Ramdev launching a corruption crusade, increasingly reminds me of Raj Kumar's earthly wisdom that those living in glass houses have no business throwing stones at others.
I have no issues with Ramdev or his cause. He's a successful yoga guru, which is why he counts millions amongst his flock. He also claims to have found a cure for incurables like AIDS, cancer and even homosexuality. But does that entitle him to declare himself a national savior and bring the capital and the whole of India to a grinding halt with his antics? I know, I know. His cause is noble. Who in his right mind would have any issues with fighting corruption?
But self-righteous lectures on transparency and honesty by someone, who went from a humble yoga teacher from Haryana to a jet-flying business baron with a declared $220 million global empire of yoga centers, hospitals and 34 companies in no time, are a bit hard to digest. It doesn't strike as odd to the "babalog" or millions of their gullible followers though. How could he resist the temptation to play the messiah of corrupt masses when a nobody like Anna Hazare could become a national icon overnight with his fast against corruption?
So even as the Lokpal law to fight graft was being hammered into shape, Ramdev had to come up with his own little show demanding the return of black money stashed abroad by Indians, repeal of high denomination currency notes, and death sentence for those guilty of corruption. And yes, Baba wanted all this delivered pronto - instant like his miracle cures.
It's hard to believe that the Congress-led government took these absurd demands of the yoga guru seriously. Four senior federal ministers, including Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, No. 2 in the government, were rushed to Delhi airport to receive Baba when he arrived from Hardwar in a private jet. They spent four hours trying to persuade him to call off the fast. A nervous government continued to woo Baba even as he went on fast and huffed and puffed surrounded by his flock and an ever-hungry media at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi.
But then we have been through this before. The Congress always inflates minor characters with its appeasement eventually turning them into monsters. This is what Prime Minister Indira Gandhi did in the case of Sikh separatist Bhindrawale, which eventually took her life. Again this is the mindset that made her son Rajiv Gandhi to open the Babri Masjid doors for puja creating another crisis from which India has yet to recover. The Ayodhya "cause" gifted by the Congress helped the BJP mutate from a 2-member party into the party of power.
ONE had thought that the Congress of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh had learned from recent history. But that was not to be. So if the initial genuflection before Ramdev was bizarre, more absurd has been the midnight swoop on Ramlila Maidan disrupting the protest and packing Baba off to Haridwar.
And now thanks to that action, the yoga guru has got the legitimacy and celebrity he was hungering for. No wonder Baba sees himself as Bhagat Singh and his eviction from Ramlila Maidan as "second Jalianwala Bagh" tragedy. Jalianwala Bagh? Please!

What will we have next? An armed attack on Lutyen's Delhi and kangaroo courts for swiftly hanging the corrupt? Where are we headed? Do we even realize the seriousness of the situation? Why did the government have to break the fast the very next day? Who's responsible for this mess? Whoever it is, he didn't have the Congress' - or nation's - interests at heart. As if the numerous corruption scandals that have surfaced with breathless frequency over the past few months were not enough to wreck the party's - and that of the UPA coalition - image, it had to come up with this suicidal move.I hate to nod in agreement when the BJP calls this government a "headless chicken." But nothing else could describe the confused, clueless and sleepwalking creature called the UPA government. Its right hand doesn't seem to know what its left is up to. Like those multiheaded monsters in Hindu mythology, it speaks in many voices all at the same time with no one being any wiser. And the one who should really be doing the talking is missing in action. Where's Manmohan Singh, the icon of new, middle class India, when we so need him?
At stake is not just the existence of the UPA coalition but the very future of India. Doubtless, corruption, like cancer, is eating into the nation's vitals. The overwhelming response to Hazare's call is a pointer to people's concerns on the issue. No government can afford to ignore this wave of public revolt - India's own Arab Spring.
However, what is disturbing about this whole campaign against corruption is its stridently saffron character.The Congress is hardly far off the mark when it accuses the Hindutva clan of hijacking the crusade against corruption. Even as Ramdev was issuing calls for an armed uprising from his Haridwar ashram, he was being visited by Hindutva luminaries, including Ashok Singhal who headed the Ayodhya movement. And it's not just Ramdev, even Anna Hazare's campaign appears to have been taken over by the same forces.
While Ramdev's rhetoric is ominously familiar, the presence of RSS icons including a huge Bharat Mata image (India personified as a Hindu deity) at Hazare's hunger strike is equally troubling. And how could you forget the aging activist's paeans to Narendra Modi, the architect of Gujarat pogrom?
SO having lost power to the Congress and milked its temple cow dry, is the Hindutva clan now trying to make a backdoor entry, as some in Congress suggest? Maybe or maybe not. But the strong saffron tint to this whole campaign is unmistakable. It's no coincidence that in every second sentence Ramdev attacks the Gandhis and Sonia's foreign roots.
As Sagarika Ghose argued this week, the Ramdev-Hazare phenomenon may be part of the new, Hindu nationalist revolution. "Hindu nationalist consolidation is gathering momentum, much of which feeds into the anti-corruption campaigns. The Ram temple movement is back, in a new avatar. There are many in the Sangh who are eying a similar opportunity to piggyback on an anti-corruption movement. 'War against corruption' is led by people of many hues, but it's also the Hindu revolution's catchall device to rally new support to the cause. A desperate search for a cause and a new rallying cry has led them to the war on corruption," writes Ghose in her brilliant piece in Hindustan Times.
A Hindu consolidation or Hindu revolution is perhaps only natural in a Hindu-majority country. But should it happen at the cost of this amazing nation's plural character and fabled tolerance? We all saw during the madness of the Ayodhya movement and the carnage of Gujarat what the Hindutva revolution means and entails for the rest of India. Do we want to go down that road? Such an India is not just against the interests of its numerous minorities but is not in anyone's interest. Extremism is as dangerous as corruption, if not more. We must learn from the nightmare next door in Pakistan.

Swami Ramdev was in Kerala propagating his religion, his version of the yoga and probably his emerging political party.

There’s no problem with any of those activities. Any Indian citizen has every right to propagate his religion, promote his political party, and even teach yoga as long as it does not go against the existing medical ethics.

Swami Ramdev did not break any of those rules. But he, or his followers, indulged in stealing. And the Kerala Electricity Board slapped a heavy fine on the Swami. When the Swami refused to pay it, the Kerala Police had to be called. Finally the Swami had to relent and pay up.

What did the Swami do, according to a report telecasted on Asianet News [prominent Malayalam TV channel] yesterday [March 29]? His men took the electric power required for his function from the electric lines without getting any required permission for it. Nothing more.

When the authorities concerned questioned the Swami’s people they were surprised. They said candidly that it was the normal procedure they followed wherever they went. They took the electric power from the electric lines that passed nearby with the help of their own electricians.

It is possible that millions of the Swami’s followers will come to his support saying that the Swami cannot be aware of what his followers did. In this case, that logic will not ever hold water. It IS the Swami’s duty to know from where his functions get the required resources. It IS the Swami’s duty to know whether his followers who arrange the function [they won’t be more than a score] are breaking the laws. It IS a serious matter if the Swami or his followers have been indulging in the same crime for years in many places with absolute impunity.

When The Hindu revealed the Wikileaks about Mr Chidambaram’s remark regarding the difference between certain regions of India, there was a hue and cry in the Parliament. The hullaballoo only reveals the ignorance of our Parliamentarians about the difference which Mr Chidambaram referred to. There indeed is a lot of difference between the regions mentioned by the Home Minister. I mentioned it in my blog on the Rail Budget.

Swami Ramdev should not indulge in the kind of exploitation of the state’s exchequer that he seems to be doing according to what his followers revealed candidly to Asianet News. Their candidness only shows how a crime becomes an accepted norm in a particular region merely because it is in practice, unquestioned. Ticketless travel, for example, is not a crime in the Railways in many of the North Indian states simply because many people do it and nobody ever questions it. Nowadays, stealing has also become an accepted practice in the Indian Railways!

Is Swami Ramdev really a yogi? I don’t know. I know that he has political ambitions. About his yoga, let me give the following link which is highly revealing.
