Azmat Class Fast Attack Craft for the Pakistan Navy

The Pakistan Navy is slated to receive its first Azmat Class Fast Attack Craft (FAC) from China in within 6 months. These boats are not to be confused with the older Azmat class which are less than half the tonnage and are significantly less capable ships. The Azmat class will be the first stealth FACs in the Subcontinent. They will be superior in every way to the Indian Navy counterparts. To date however, only two such ships have been ordered. A follow on order for two more are also likely.

Of the two boats ordered, one is being built in China and another is being built in Pakistan. These boats are well-armed although somewhat lacking in air defense, a typical problem with smaller boats of this type. The ships are designed to have both a defensive and offensive capability. Herein lies the advantage of these boats - with many Indian ports within 200 miles of Pakistan, the Azmat Class's 500 nautical mile range and 110 mile C-802 range makes these boats an effective threat along with her traditional defensive coastal role. The ship is further equiped with a modern networked C4I system that will be a force multiplier in terms of network-centric warfare, utilizing the sensors of other ships, aircraft and PN assets.

The PLAN Type 022 Houbei Class

A question is often asked why the PN did not by the Type 022 Houbei Class FACs. While these boats are faster and stealthy, they have significantly less range and are also more dependent on external guidance and sensors. Their hull design is also not as suited for poor weather conditions at sea. These imply that they would be less effective for the Pakistan Navy. The Type 022 are also significantly smaller boats. In comparison, the 022 pursues closely the Soviet doctrine of missile boats which also require large numbers. In comparison, the Azmat Class is closer to an OPV (Offshore Petrol Vehicle) suitable for a wide variety of roles as an OPV and a missile boat. In fact, this author speculates that they may later even utilize ship-launched UAVs.

One notable characteristic of the Azmat Class is that it uses nearly half the crew for a similar sized / category ship. This shows how advanced automation has reached Chinese naval development and will significantly lower the cost of operating these boats. They also would lower the casualty count in case of war.

The Azmat Class is considered slower than some contemporary missile boats, although of similar speed to Corvettes and OPVs. The length of the ship in relation to the bow wave creates an optimal speed when the latter is nearly the same length as the former. At this speed the drag is lower, giving the ship greater endurance. 30 knots is thus a compromise and a an ideal "sweet spot" for a ship that is 60 meters in length. Further, this represents only open source information and it may be the ship can run faster when needed at wartime.

10 Barreled CIWS on Shi-Lang
The CIWS for the ship remains a mystery. It is believed that this is represented by two 25mm automated guns. The author's unqualified and non-technical wish is to have a more effective CIWS, perhaps the 10 barreled CIWS recently shown on China's new aircraft carrier, the Shi-Lang. The author admits that this may be wishful thinking considering the size of the Azmat Class. However, if the traditional main gun is seen as dispensable, such a CIWS may serve in the "A" position up front.

At $50 million, the Azmat Class is a moderately priced ship that is well-balanced in her traits and able to play multiple roles, a quality rare for her class. The ship provides both stealth and automation that breaks new standards. Capable of both defensive and offensive operations, the Azmat class will play a small but important role in the Pakistan Navy.

.
is it the one in the pic, if so, <drools> OMG <drools>

. . . .
Cant we deploy Babur CMs on these FACs and other ships of PN? Im sure its not very hard to do so?

.
The ship is obviously a great new addition , 20 of these ships would greatly enhance our special , fast hit and maneuver to safety operations

As the document stated these ships are better then the other , unique looking ships as they are independent units the other ship has to move with support crafts this is just like a frigate

Well all the ships can carry the shoulder held missiles so all our ships have that capability

Plus I am positive we can add new Missile Air defenses

There must be something cooking otherwise Pakistan navy would not be inducting so many ships with no air defenses;) something is cooking ...

I feel we will get a surprise with regards to the air defenses for navy ships

.
I hope Pakistan be able to build such ships in very near future independantly.

We already have the capacity n the industrial base.... Jalalat class, larkana class missile and various STUS ships are a few of our indiginous ships...

Building F-22s,FACs,Agostas have improved our capacity further.... the only thing we lack right now is money.

. .
Well if we had 20 of these stealth Azmat Class ships , with duel purpose it would make sense

a) Anti Ship missiles which they are currently enabled
b) Surface to air Missiles in second configuration (Which we need as well)

The question is from where can we buy the modification to enable some variants to have anti air capabilities

As all our navy ships are suspect-able to Air strikes from Sukhoi fighters

Odd fleet of 30-40 Mirages in Navy is great but we do need a genuine Air defense built in out ships

However I am very comfortable with the Anti Ship capabilities of our Navy !!!

a) JF17 thunders
b) Orions
c) Mirages
d) Missile boats

We just need a solution for air threats

.
I wonder why they aren't putting these guns on as secondary weapons, surely 30mm is better than 25mm. :P

.
why are pakistanis renaming some ships imported as a pakistani class, i mean it sounds like pakistan is producing them

.
quoting from pshamim sir
Little bit more news on the two under construction Missile boats. Most of the news in my opinion is guess work based on few pictures. But some other may very well be true.

The two boats already have names. The first constructed in China is named "Aziz Mutt" and the other as "Ards Mutt" Do not know where the name Mutt came from.

About 60 meters long with a displacement between 500-600 Tons. IEach will cost $50 million and will be manned by 12-14 officers and sailors. Boat's superstructure is said to be flat and angular making them stealthy. Though other weapons are not known, it is equipped with Chinese "Eagle Strike 82A" anti ship missiles.

Good News indeed but like said by many others here, PN really needs to work on Air Defence aspect of its fleet. In context of future threats like Mig-29K and P-8I, having a reliable high altitude SAM on PN ships would be a must have thing.
