Awareness programme: Military peeved by false reports of abuse

PESHAWAR: A senior Army commander on Monday expressed the military’s agitation on allegations of human rights abuses by security forces.

“Some organisations and NGOs are continuously portraying a negative image of the Army and publishing false allegations against security forces,” Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Asif Yaseen Malik told the media here.

General Malik was talking to reporters at a five-day awareness programme on human rights abuses and rules of engagement for the military officers at the Corps Headquarters, Peshawar.

The outburst came in the wake of media reports suggesting that the Obama administration is alarmed about reports of thousands of political separatists and Taliban militants disappearing into the hands of Pakistani police and security forces.

At the programme, human rights activist IA Rehman said that things should be investigated first. “All videos that portray a negative image of the Army should be investigated thoroughly first.”

Military operations in Fata:

About military operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, General Malik said that security forces have almost cleared the area, adding that there were some pockets of militancy still there, which will be cleared soon.

General Malik said that Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from South Waziristan were repatriating to their homes and will be helped in every way.

Talking about reconstruction and rehabilitation operations in the restive agency, he said that roads have been constructed and will be inaugurated by June this year. “Electricity supply to 50 villages will also be restored at the same time,” he said.

The Corps Commander added that some foreign hands were involved in sabotaging the peaceful environment of Bajaur Agency, and that military has evidence of this, which has been handed over to the government. “Afghanistan is a safe haven for militants. Militants attack and escape to their shelters,” he added. He further added that the government was busy discussing the matter with its neighbours.

Army officers throughout the country are participating in the awareness programme that will end on January 14.

IA Rehman, Anees Gillani, Kamran Adil, Nasir Jalil, Ahmar Bilal Soofi, Justice Nasira Javed and DG ISPR Major General Athar Abbas will also give speeches during the programme.
