The BNP-led coalition has rejected the municipal election results, saying the government has ‘hijacked the people’s mandate' by using a ‘subservient’ Election Commission.











It blamed the EC for ‘failing to perform its constitutional duties’ and demanded its resignation.

“The BNP and the 20-party alliance is rejecting the municipal polls results,” BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a press conference at party chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office on Thursday morning.

“At the same time, we demand resignation of the [election] commission and the government for deceiving the people and failing to discharge their constitutional obligations.”

On Wednesday, 234 municipalities went to polls, first time on party lines. Unofficial results for 227 mayor posts have so far been announced.

The Awami League has bagged 177 of the posts while the BNP has managed to win only 22.

In reaction to his party’s ‘humiliating defeat,’ the BNP leader said, “The government conducted held an unprecedented farcical and flawed election and the ruling party snatched the people’s mandate by using a subservient Election Commission and the politicised administration and police.”

“This has proved that no election held under this government and the election commission can be credible or fair.”

Though the BNP has alleged ‘massive irregularities’ in the polls, the EC has claimed that except for some isolated incidents, the elections were held in a fair and peaceful manner. The ruling AL too has expressed satisfaction at the polls.

Voting took place at around 3,500 centres simultaneously amid reports of sporadic incidents of violence and irregularities.

A man was killed in Chittagong’s Satkania in a clash while another died in Barguna on Thursday from injuries sustained during the polls.

Elections to Madhabdi Municipality in Narsinghdi and voting at 38 centres of 18 other municipalities were suspended for malpractices and violence.

This was expected, and this is gonna be the regular feature in Bangladesh in the years to come.

It is kind of simple. There was another thread where a BD minister? was saying BD was build on secular principles. In many regressive Muslim nations (and even some pockets of highly religious places in the world), that would be enough to get the minister on a hit list.

BD people have appreciated the "secular" movement more than the "religious" movement for the government. What religion they personally follow is their choice. But to impose that through govt writ is unequivocally rejected by the results of the polls.

BD is an example we use in support of a progressive, moderate, modern Muslim. Hans Rosling in his Ted talks is all praise for the progressive BD religious scholars and the govt. and he should rightly be so!

There is no civil war in Bangladesh. Syria's case is completely different from Bangladesh. The opposition party of Bangladesh BNP is a filthy party with a leader like Khaleda and Tareq Zia who have very bad image in Bangladesh. Khaleda off late has become a controversial figure after her open support for war criminals and derogatory remark on martyred freedom fighters and intellectuals. Her party man also recently made another derogatory remark on martyred intellectuals.

Also Sheikh Hasina's strong stand against World Bank regarding Padma Bridge was well applaud by people. Start of Padma Bridge construction gained good image for the government hence people voted for Awami League.

I know few things about statistics and as per my knowledge PDF is not suitable for taking sample data and you know why

What has impressed me is that Bangladesh has Mayor elections.

Even India has not brought local self government rule to Mayors, we have municipal elections for cities, not Mayor elections. There are proposals to enact this in administrative reforms but so far we have not done it.

Kudos to Bangladesh for devolving democracy down to the cities! It should be a sign to us and we should follow soon!
