Is Bangladesh hurtling towards Civil war? Is it moving towards confrontation with Bharat (aka India)? The last elections in December 2008 gave the Awami League a comfortable lead in the polls but the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Bangladesh Jamat e Islami claimed that the elections were rigged.
The BNP was on the verge of victory in the previous polls when the Indian sympathetic temporary government was imposed on Dhaka. The military backed government purged 14 million BNP supporter names from the polls so that the Awami League could claim victory. There was massive funding from Delhi for the Awami League and concerted campaign of malignment was waged against the BNP and the BJI. Since taken over power, Hasina Mujib has gone after the BNP and the BJI with a vengeance. Old skeletons have been pulled out of the old closets and Dhaka plans trials for those it thinks worked against the Bengali interests in 1971. Mrs Khaleda Zia was recently acquitted of the graft charges by a Bangladeshi court.
A list of dozens of men has been created. Indian backed forces are targeting all nationalistic parties. Bangladeshs Jamaat-e-Islami party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid have faced the brunt of the charges. The Awami Legue government of Bangladesh is also targeting 12 militant groups. They are; Jamaatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh (JMB), Harkatul Jihad al Islami (HuJI), Hizbut Towhid, Ulama Anjuman al Bainat, Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Islami Democratic Party, Islami Samaj, Touhid Trust, Jagrata Muslim Janata Bangladesh, Shahadat-e al-Hikma Party Bangladesh, Tamira Ar-Din Bangladesh (Hizb-e Abu Omar) and Allahr Dal (Times of India, March 17). New groups are also coming into action outfit has emerged under the name of Islam-o-Muslim (IoM). Also recently, police arrested Mahmudul Haque Bhuiyan, the local president of a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in Brahmanbaria, a district in east-central Bangladesh, on specific charges of tender manipulation and abduction filed with the police. As the news of Mahmuds arrest spread, angry activists of the Chhatra League damaged public property and carried out arson attacks in the town of Brahmanbaria. The whole town turned into a veritable battleground. Some say that the roots of Bangladeshi violence were sown by the events of 1970 when Indira Gandhi armed, trained, and sent Indian Army soldiers into Bengal to sow murder mayhem and chaos into the peaceful country. A dictatorship was created by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known simply as Sheikh Mujib, when the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League was formed as a national party by decree on Feb. 24, 1975. Any political parties other than the political amalgamation of the Awami League were outlawed at the time. In the three decades since, the rulers added various aspects to the dictatorship that Sheikh Mujib had started. Torture and political killings were instituted in Bangladesh by a militia, Jatiyo Rakkhi Bahini, supportive of the government and by the government during the rule of Sheikh Mujib. Some people have also accused Gono Bahini, or the Peoples Army, an underground gang loyal to the ultra-left political party Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, for political killings, looting of police stations, armed robberies, and other acts of sabotage with the purpose of undermining law and order and tarnishing the image of Sheikh Mujib by spreading rumors about him The growth of the BAKSAL was the single most important cause contributing to the death of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
On 14th August patriotic Bengalis assassinated the Indian agent, and threw his body on the streets of Dhaka where it lay for a week. All members of the Mujib family were killed. The only survivor was Hasina Mujib who was in Sweden at the time.
The current events remind analysts about the Mujib dictatorship and how it eliminated all opposition in the country.
Recently, the cabinet has approved a law to provide lifelong security for Sheikh Mujibur Rahmans family, effective immediately on July 6, 2009. The law is in line with previous legislation enacted in 2001, when the Awami League was in power, which was repealed by the BNP government that replaced them.
The law clearly contradicts the fundamental state policy of Bangladesh of equality of opportunity.
The present political regime is leading the nation toward another Islamic revolt. The underground Islamic movement is gaining more power than ever and human rights violations are increasing each and every day.
National challenges, dissatisfaction within the army, and the governments inability to deal with the needs of the time has caused Mujibs political regime to lead the country toward national failure. Hasinas political regime is again leading the nation toward another national failure.
