ISLAMABAD: Reported differently by media houses that the prime UK based witness forensic expert Robert Radley on Thursday while appearing before Accountability Court via video link from London, admitted that ‘calibri’ font was available in 2005, hence the perception was given that the main accused in Avefield reference Maryam Nawaz, Captain(R) Safdar who presented their trust deed before ‘Joint Investigation Team’ probing off shore companies of Sharif family did not allegedly forge their documents as the aforementioned font was available for use then in 2005.

But the second and most important testimony which the UK based witness gave to accountability court was ignored or not given that much of importance that the font came to market for commercial purposes, post January, 2007.

More Robert Radley just admitted that the use of ‘calibri’ font was available in window Beta version, albeit in limited scale.

The font’s beta version came out for testing purposes for selected software houses in 2005, the complete version of the font was released in 2007, added Robert Radley.

NAB references against Sharif family: Robert Radley wishes to change statement

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – While hearing of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references against Sharif family in the accountability court on Friday, Robert Radley expressed his wish to change statement and told that he is neither IT or computer expert, but a forensic analyst.

Speaking to Sharif family’s counsel Khawaja Harris as witness in cross-examination, Radley said Calibri font was used in 2005.

He further pointed out that there were 360 fonts in Microsoft Office now while the number was only 6 back in 2005, including Calibri font. The man who invested Calibri font was awarded too during the same year, he added.

Talking about his report, Radley said he didn’t mention in his report that there are several types of Calibri font. “I received documents on July 6 and couldn’t compile a detailed report due to shortage of time,” he stated.

Harris asked him whether he is pointing out at the possibility of the report not being true due to short time, at which the witness answered that it is wrong. He said he stands by his report and did not prepare it under the supervision of NAB officials.

Sharif family’s lawyer said Radley’s statement had been recorded and cannot be changed during cross-examination.

In yesterday’s hearing, the prosecution witness had corroborated that the facility of Calibri font was available in the Windows Vista Beta.

I don't know how much you know about computers and software but this font was available as beta version in early 2005 in Vista. I for one always try to use beta versions of different software packages just for the sake of taste-for-new despite taking some risks. Many professionals do that. It's not unimaginable that whoever typed in and printed those documents in 2006 used that font. But our judges are so so. One of them was claiming claiming/remarking that no one in UK even answers a call on Sundays how you could claim of preparing these documents on a Sunday. That's pure ignorance on the part of that judge. Many offices are open on Sundays too. Another example of ignorant judgment was the case of Orange train in Lahore. The project suffered a lot due to a stay on it by LHC on grounds that train passes by too close to the historical sites in the city. What a stupidity! In other countries, city governments try to get public transport (trains, buses, etc.) not just close - but next door - to the historical places for making it easier for the tourists. But again our judges are just ignorant. No sense at all.

Why would a law firm use a Beta product! Why use a product that can crash because it's not a final product! Law Firms don't have time to waste!

Look at the supposed solicitor here! Here is a question Whenever a solicitor stamps something to make it a legal binding document. The stamp will always have the Law Firm's name in it! But the stamp has name of the lawer and that's it! Why? Is the solicitor not working at a firm. Maryam cannot hire a reputable Law Firm in London where top Lawyers practise?

Since you do test beta fonts, can you tell me how would the beta version of the font in question be installed on normal machines? Is it an installation file or what exactly? Also do let us all know how a beta font is available on the Internet? Does Microsoft sends it to registered testers or it is available on its website for everyone? If Microsoft sends it to testers, do these testers include British law firms as well?

Many law firms are open over the weekend (especially on Saturdays). Search for a solicitors firm near you now and I guarantee some of them will be open tomorrow. Or drive down the high street tomorrow and see for yourself.

If a lawyer is attesting a document or witnessing a signature, he will use the date that he/she did so on; not the next weekday.

Official work is not restricted to weekdays.

All the solicitor seems to have done in those docs is witness a signature. For this he didnt need his company stamp and even if he used it, he would still be required to provide his own name. This is why many solicitors use such (personalised) stamps for attestation and witnessing.

Whether this docs or anything related to it are genuine or not - I cannot say. But the points you raised were not valid at all.

I m not sure about Panjab.. but in Karachi Law firms do operate on Saturdays.. however the office timings are limited..

Actually most of the time we date the document prepared for the next working/court day.

A document has to be prepared on Saturday but the date is for coming Monday... and any document has to be validated by both parties..

Tell me something, I know lawyers work on the weekend and I said in my post about solicitors working on the weekend. Not a lawyer but a date on the weekend is new to me! I will ask about it but to me it seems dodgy because the Courts don't function on the weekend! forget that even these are menial technicalities.

Wrong understanding! The font was part of Windows Vista beta version (then called Longhorn) starting 2004.
