New Delhi: Scripting history, flying officer Avani Chaturvedi has become the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft, an Indian Air Force official said.

"Chaturvedi became the first Indian woman to fly a fighter aircraft solo when she flew a MiG-21 bison in her first solo flight," the official said.

She undertook the sortie from IAF's Jamnagar base on Monday, he said.

Three women pilots, Ms Chaturvedi, Ms Bhawana Kanth and Ms Mohana Singh, had undergone strenuous training programme to fly fighter jets.

They were commissioned as flying officers in July 2016, less than a year after the government decided to open the fighter stream for women on an experimental basis.

The IAF has already selected the next batch of three women trainee pilots for the fighter stream.

it's not a dick measuring contest. Their women have been into space. When did we send one?

Thank you for your pragmatic approach! Its about empowering of women and that's all that matters.
India needs to empower more women than to treat them as second class citizens.
Also, by not utilizing women in the workforce, we are undercutting the size of the workforce by 50% approx. This is something South Asia can be better at.

I believe she was of an Indian origin but went on an STS mission with NASA after she became a US citizen. The Indian government had no role in sending her up, it was the US government that sent her up.

Coming back, great achievement for Flying Officer Avani Chaturvedi......the desired touch of thousands, yet amongst the selected few to blast across the skies on your own.....quite an achievement in a young officer's career and lifetime.

Thanks heavens a good news about women is coming from India at last, otherwise, it is all about Rape and molestation.
