Avalanche traps about 150 Pakistani soldiers

Day 14: Siachen avalanche took less than 5 seconds, says WAPDA – The Express Tribune

SIACHEN: According to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), the avalanche took less than five seconds to wreak havoc on the unfortunate soldiers posted at Gayari, as intimated by its hydrological experts on Saturday.

Hundreds of millions of tons of mass moving at speeds sufficient to cover a kilometer or so in a few seconds gives only a rough idea of the immense kinetic energy dissipated by that avalanche.

but how can it be? sounds a bit exaggerated.
1.5 miles between glacier and camp..covered in 5 seconds?
thats almost the speed of sound??

May be 5 seconds seem exaggerated but this is sure that it doesn't let any one run away. It is over the head till someone realize that its coming. It is very fast, powerful and takes everything in way with enormous momentum.

Hope for the best

You see truck's two wheel tires with the wires protection, I have seen here. Does it make smooth easier in just snow?

It is cool.

Not wire protection...snow chains. They provide traction.

Have they reached anyone yet?

SIACHEN: As military personnel and volunteers work round the clock on the extensive rescue operation in the Gayari Sector in Siachen, a total of 1.73 million cubic feet area has been shifted since the avalanche engulfed the battalion headquarters.

According to an update issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), despite cold weather hindering the operation, frequently causing equipment to break down, all efforts were being made to extract the trapped soldiers and civilians.

The platforms, constructed on all sites, have been consolidated, however excavation work is being focused on expansion of the sites. The ground-penetrating radar teams have identified two more points. Meanwhile, a Norwegian team has arrived in Islamabad to help.

they will pick up pace now as until now they were doing it cautiously at slow pace...so that any survivors may not get harmed...
but now they dont seem to have any further reason to hope for survivors and they can procees at full pace...

other than that as a public interne forum. this fotum did better than commeratial/professional news channels at keeping full track of the disaster and later operaion.
All information about the disaster can be found in this along with our on analysis and opinions which are now proving to be accurate enough..

we did estimate that the rubble that came down on gayari was about 2.5 million tons...
that coincides with the figure of 10 million cubic feet you post here.
