Many people in Europe understand that in case of any turmoils in the United States, the only real power in the continent will be Russia. In addition, by culture, race and religion - we are kindred peoples. Russia has been part of various European alliances and coalitions even before the US were born.

By the way, the grandfather of Alexander Van der Bellen was governor of Pskov's region in Russia before the Socialist Revolution. Just an interesting fact.

I don't know much about their positions nor about Austria's politics,but from what i've read,his election wouldn't make a radical change to Austria's policies and politics.
If he can,among other things,appoint the Chancellor and dissolve the parliament.... the Austrian president's powers are traditionally limited to a morale and protocol role. @Jagdkommando

yeah, Austria isn't going to change much, I haven't bothered reading up too much about them.
