This not the first time the opposition has raised this issue. They raised this before when India-Canada signed a nuke deal.
Do you think the Liberals can win this this time considering that people did hate Kevin Rudd for being too pro-China?
Liberals will probably win despite the fact that their leader Tony Abbot is a clueless moron who has made any number of gaffes about hitech, disabled people and senior citizens.
The Labor leader Julia Gillard only got the top job after some nasty, high-profile backstabbing in the party which has bruised the party and is still fresh in people's minds. Also she is running the losing strategy of letting her opponent set the agenda by pandering to the right and trying to co-opt their issues. This is idiotic because the xenophobic right is firmly in the Liberal camp and all she is doing is alienating centrists and center-leftists. Although, to be fair, this strategy is not as risky as it might be in the US becasue voting is mandatory in Australia so disaffected centrist voters can't just sit it out. They will have to vote, and probably Labor, albeit grudgingly.
Who cares whether they are pro-US or pro-Jupiter as long as the Uranium reaches our shores.
Quite correct but, as I pointed out, it is not Indian money but American interests which are at play here. Australian economy is highly dependent on Chinese demand of our natural resources and there is no fear of Chinese demand abating any time soon.
I doubt this has anything to do with us, perhaps this is being done to appease Australians of Indian origin, I understand they represent a sizable minority.
Balancing US and Chinese concerns are a very important subtext in Australian foreign policy. Labor tends to be more Asia-Pacific focussed, while Liberals tend to be more Euro/West oriented. There is a decidedly 'white' tinge to Liberal policies.
Most Australians of Indian origin tend to live in electorates which are heavily Labor anyway, so there is no point in Liberals pandering to them.
