IN a move that has set alarm bells ringing in Canberra, East Timor yesterday foreshadowed closer military ties with China.

It follows the handover in June of two 43m Shanghai class patrol boats which East Timor purchased for $28 million.

In a speech which appeared to take issue with Australian defence co-operation, East Timor's Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao praised Beijing for its generous aid program, saying his government was keen to forge closer military links with China.

Senior diplomatic analysts told The Australian China's foray into what has been traditionally regarded as "Australia's sphere of interest" had set alarm bells ringing in Canberra.

Australia has always been edgy about great powers establishing strategic positions in the neighbourhood, said Professor Hugh White, a former deputy secretary in the Defence Department who is now head of the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at ANU.

"It's contrary to a very deep intuitive sense we have of our strategic interests. And I don't doubt for a moment Australia will be very nervous about this," Professor White said.

If a future US-China relationship became more competitive with the region divided into pro-US and pro-China blocs, Beijing's strategic military presence in East Timor could pose a serious challenge for Australia, he said.

China's growing military footprint in East Timor also raises worries about Canberra's handling of its multi-million defence program with East Timor, a program Dili regards as excessively conditional.

Australia has provided Dili with more than $1 billion in aid since the historic 1999 UN-brokered ballot for independence from Indonesia.

In a further snub to Australia, East Timor has sought closer economic relations with pariah state Burma and wants to join the Melanesian Spearhead Group after expressing support for Fiji coup leader Frank Bainimarama.

China is only regaining her rightful influence amongst the South East Asian nations. What's the worry? It is not like we barged in with our military and started setting up puppet regimes or anything.

Apparently the recent strengthening of military ties between China and East Timor that got some Australians so worked up consists of China building a $9 million HQ for East Timor military.

Japan used to be quite cordial towards China during the late 70s and 80s. They became less cordial after China's economic/military growth accelerated rapidly in the 21st century. I think the Australians are undergoing a similar transition.

Yeah, it's easy to be friendly from a position of strength. Chinese attitude toward Japan has turned remarkably warmer in the last few years, while Japanese attitude toward China cooled.

Most of the Australians that I have met personally, have been very nice people.

Strategically, Australia is worried about China's rising influence in the Pacific.

(Not to mention the large numbers of Chinese and Indian immigrants that are flowing into Australia).

That is a very good point.

I don't think they need to worry about Chinese expansionism though.

Expansionism and conflict is not "profitable" in this day and age. The best way for China to move forward, is to focus on economic growth.

Total reliance on Australia would make East Timor looked its colony, especially if Australia wants to dictate East Timor's defence needs and foreign policies.

They have the right to decide on their own defence needs, from whom they buy and what they buy should be their own decision.

We don't band together against Australia because it's not personal, it's business. If we only do business with people who like us, we'd be America. I think you are pretty naive to think business is complete devoid of anything personal. If they don't like you, they won't shop at your store. If they don't like you, they can prevent you from even entering the store to buy food.

China tried to buy some natural resources, but since the people didn't like you, they raised a stink and make the goverment stop the sales.

Business is transactions between people, and people are inherently personal.

This kind of isolationist thinking is what brought Asia down. Asians think as long as they play fair, other will too. Look where that got Asians.

When it concerns foreign policy against non-white countries, "the West" (white countries) are totally in concert, because they share a common goal - to maintain white supremacy and privilege in the world, to spread Wester culture, so people around the world would prefer putting money into whites people pockets by buy Western products and culture, than their own culture. It is all interconnected.


Why do you think people don't refer to "the East" the same way they refer to "the West"? Because the West have divided the East into small factions and make them kill each other, while the West waits to pick up the spoils. The West are united in a common goal, while Asian all think their own respective countries are great and failed to integrate with other Asia. China borrowed a lot of religious tradition from India. All other East Asian country significantly borrowed a lot from China, yet they don't cooperate and share technology to allievate the miserable condition that most people of Asia lives in.

Japan (neutered by two nukes) and Korea (Christinian fanatics burning down their own Buddhist temple in favor of a colonialist religion ) are pretty much dogs of the Western countries.

The biggest threat (both militarily and culturally) to Asia is not China, it is the West.

Look at India, pretty everyone speak English and want to be light skinned, even men. India will have NO LITERARY tradition going forward, because everyone will write their novels in English, speak English, contribute to the English Literary tradition, but nothing to their own native language. When people lose culture, they lose everything and become another pawn state.
