Australia world's 'dumb blonde'

AUSTRALIA is viewed as the ''dumb blonde'' of the world, attractive but shallow and unintelligent, according to a visiting British branding expert.

Simon Anholt, who has advised the governments of more than 40 countries on national identity and reputation, said Australia's one-dimensional image meant that events such as attacks on Indian students could do greater damage here than in countries with which people were more familiar.

''A well-rounded national reputation is an insurance policy against that kind of thing,'' Mr Anholt told The Age.

Mr Anholt yesterday addressed a conference on international education in Sydney organised by IDP Education, the international student recruitment company half-owned by 38 Australian universities.

Australia's international education industry, which is worth more than $18 billion annually, is facing a significant decline in enrolments as a result of a number of factors, including the strong Australian dollar, changes to migration rules and the fallout from several attacks on Indian students.

Mr Anholt said the results of an annual national reputation survey he oversees with public affairs company GfK Roper showed Australia's reputation in India had been badly tarnished by the attacks.

''The damage to Australia's reputation in India is quite severe,'' Mr Anholt said.

In 2008, the Indian panel of respondents ranked Australia seventh in the world for promoting equality within society. In 2010, Australia's rank on this measure dropped to 34th.

Overall, the survey of 39,000 people in 26 countries ranked Australia the ninth-most admired country in the world.

Mr Anholt said Australia was ranked best in the world for natural beauty and as a place to visit if money was no object. But he said the success of Australia's tourism promotion campaigns had produced an ''unbalanced'' view of the country.

''What you have is an image of a country that is considered to be very decorative, but not very useful,'' he said.

Mr Anholt said Australia relied too much on ''logos and slogans'' in its efforts to change people's minds about the country. ''Rather than waste time fiddling around with promotional campaigns, what Australia needs to do is to invest in the sectors which demonstrate its seriousness and its capability and education is one of them.''

Another such area was culture. Mr Anholt said Australia was unusual among developed nations in not having an organisation devoted to the promotion of culture, such as Germany's Goethe Institute or France's Alliance Francaise.

Mr Anholt said the US did not have such an organisation, but arguably did not need one because of the global reach of its entertainment industry. ''But Australia has Les Patterson, and I don't think that's enough.''

Mr Anholt also questioned the worth of Tourism Australia's decision to bring out US talk show host Oprah Winfrey and her audience for a series of programs in December.

The title is extreme & way off the mark.

A little too much. Aussies are good fun to be with. Aberrations happen every where.

Simon Anholt is obviously blond himself, as his statements are clearly ridiculous and idiotic.

Our tourism industry is thriving and is a large part of our GDP, yet he claims it's doing poorly and no one is coming.

Also he claims we are all unintelligent, yet we have 1 of the best education systems in the world.

Also i am pretty sure America has a more of a stereotype of being stupid, then Australia.

Calling an intelligent country, unintelligent is really unintelligent. :azn:

:tdown:Its stereotyping an entire nation.

My closest experience with land "Down Under" was having a steak at the "Outback Steakhouse." I didn't see any blond girl serving me the few times I have been there. Well they are not Aussies anyway.

Offtopic:

OTOH I am not so sure about the Hooters girls, they are mostly blond and **** !!:partay:

Although there are aberrations in every country i don't agree with this whoever's absurd comments.

Sound's very great , it seems he advised 40 countries :undecided: if this is what he does he could be soon out of business for sure.

Why do these analysts spring up like rabbits out of hat giving advise here an there. That took a lot of thinking from me to write :coffee: got to get back to bed.

they have an advanced country, best education system, one of the highest standard life in the world, peaceful country, strong economy, rich, etc. dumb people cant do all this.

Agreed. The author is 'Australophobic' :D

AUSTRALIA is viewed as the ''dumb blonde''

The author here means that Australia is viewed as dumb I think. That is not implying that Australians are dumb, just that the perception of people is such.
I can't find anywhere in the article where he calls the Australians dumb.

article is a bit skewed ...though in Aussie culture ....sports and games are given far more priority than in places like South Asia with a national obsession for Academics....Aussie accomplishments in research, science & Tech is usually less known internationally than their sporting ones.....

The author is describing what The world thinks of Australia......not what it actually is......
