Because it couldn't possibly be a Chinese newspaper making things up could it? LOL.
It was Bishop lying and not the newspapers, so why shift the blame to the media?
She didn't say it. The newspaper reported the wrong thing. The Chinese newspaper misquoted her in an interview she gave to another media organization.
Well, since it was a (non-tabloid) Australian newspaper that first reported this, one may assume it's close to the source of information and thus the information must be correct.
The phrase "stand up to China" was not reported as a direct quotation.
