Attempts to undermine Pak-China ties doomed to fail: Beijing​

BEIJING: Pakistani top leadership’s show of solidarity with China over the killing of Chinese citizens in Karachi once again demonstrated that the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people and any attempt to undermine mutual trust and cooperation is doomed to fail, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Thursday.

Addressing a regular briefing, he said following the attack at the University of Karachi, President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, PTI Chairman Imran Khan and other lawmakers visited the Chinese embassy to offer their condolences.

“This once again shows that the All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership between China and Pakistan is deeply rooted in the hearts of the people and that the attempt of terrorist forces to undermine the China-Pakistan mutual trust and cooperation is doomed to fail,” he said in response to a question.

The spokesperson said that Beijing would work with Islamabad to get to the bottom of the truth, bring the perpetrators to justice, and give a satisfactory explanation and answer to the people of the two countries.

China paid great attention to Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the security of Chinese personnel, projects and institutions, he added. “We are ready to work with Pakistan to ensure the smooth operation of our cooperation in a safe manner and prevent such incidents from happening again.”

On April 26, three Chinese teachers of Confucius Institute at Karachi University and their driver were killed when their shuttle van was hit by a suicide attack.

Soon after the incident, PM Shehbaz visited the Chinese embassy in Islamabad and met China’s acting Ambassador Pang Chunxue to convey his condolences.

He instructed the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and assured the government would spare no efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and hold them accountable.

CPEC minimized power shortage in Pakistan: Energy ministry​

According to the Ministry of Energy, CPEC energy projects have begun to alleviate the power shortfall. From 2013 to 2018, the ministry stated that 11,650 MW of electricity was added to the national grid system. During this time, work on local Thar Coal-based projects began for the first time in the country.
According to the ministry, CPEC has begun work on Thar coal power generation projects. It stated that the Thar Coal Power Project, with a capacity of 660 megawatts, has already provided low-cost electricity. Work on the 884 MW Sukki Kinari hydel project began in 2018 and is expected to operational in 2024. Similarly, the 720 MW Karrot project was initiated in 2017 and will begin supplying power to the national grid in July.


ISLAMABAD, May 6 (Gwadar Pro) – China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy projects have started minimizing the power shortage, Pakistani Ministry of Energy said on Thursday afternoon.

Releasing details, the ministry mentioned that as much as 11,650 MW electricity was added to the national grid system from 2013 to 2018.

About 3,000 MW clean energy had been added to the system during the said period, it added.

Out of total 3,000 MW, 1,350 MW hydel and 1,400 MW wind and solar energy was included in the system, the ministry informed.

For the first time, work on local Thar Coal based projects was started in the country during the said period. Thar Coal power generation projects were started under CPEC, the ministry elaborated.

It highlighted that 660 MW Thar Coal power project has already supplied cheap electricity. Work on 884 MW Sukki Kinari hydel project was started in 2018 which would start generation by 2024.

Similarly, 720 MW Karrot was launched in 2017 and it would start supply power to the national grid this July, the ministry underlined.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that the government is diligently working on the execution of CPEC and Reko Diq projects, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The premier stated this while talking to a delegation of Council of Pakistan Newspapers Editors (CPNE) in Lahore on Sunday. He reiterated his government’s resolve to religiously follow the CPEC and Reko Diq projects till their completion.

He said as far as our foreign policy was concerned, the government wanted to establish relations with all countries including brotherly Muslim states based on respect and mutual interests.

He expressed his resolve that the government wanted free and transparent elections in the country stressing the need to introduce electoral reforms.

The premier also informed the CPNE delegation that the government did not have any intention to restrict freedom of press. He assured the editors that journalists would be defended against all the anti-press laws including PECA Ordinance.

He told the delegation that his government had already entrusted the task to review the draconian PECA Ordinance to its law ministry.

He also appreciated the role of CPNE for the evolution of press freedom and development of democracy and democratic institutions in the country.

Shehbaz vowed to work with the CPNE for the promotion of journalistic responsibilities and security of journalists in the country

On power generation, he vowed that his government would ensure production of electricity and its transmission to consumers in an effective way.

He lamented that the previous government had put unbearable burden of foreign debts on poor people of Pakistan and made essential commodities out of the reach of poor people. He said his government was taking steps to ameliorate the lot of the downtrodden segment of society.

He called upon the nation to show solidarity so that we could be able to fix the tattered economy.

The meeting was attended by Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, Secretary Information Shaheera Shahi, and Principal Information Officer Mubashir Hassan.

The CPNE delegation comprised of its President Kazim Khan, Senior Vice President Ayaz Khan, Punjab Vice President Arshad Ahmad Arif, Secretary General Amir Mehmood and other CPNE office-bearers.
